I've been running Firefox and Thunderbird on test on my PC for the last 6 months. Now that I've bought a new laptop, and following my evaluation of both products over the past months, I've decided to install them, as my primary browser and email client. In fact, I haven't even bothered installing IE or OE or Outlook.
Combine that with a GMail address setup as my primary POP3 email account, and you have a winning recipe !!!

Unless you are using a non-Windows operating system you will have got IE and OE by default because they both come bundled with Windows. You don't have to use either of them but you should still log onto the Windows Update site on a regular basis to make sure that you have all the latest security updates.

Well actually, that is not strictly correct. If you install WXP in it's default configuration, then IE and OE are installed for you however, if you choose the advanced installation, that is; to to select which components are installed, then both can be left out of the installation. Also, one needn't login to the Windows Update site anymore; it is now possible to configure WXP to automaticalyl download and install updates in the background.

Nor do I. I use IE to get Windows Updates. It's about all I use it for these days, I can get Hotmail via Firefox if I don't want to access it via IE or MSN Messenger. Madeline.

That pre-supposes that you are installing Windows from scratch. The vast majority of users will have PCs with Windows pre-installed. In any case both IE and OE will still be sitting on the PC even if they are not installed. The only difference is that you won't have access to them from the Start Menu unless properly installed. And you will still need IE to get Windows Updates.

Why does EVERY SINGLE reply to my original posting here pre-suppose that there is something that I haven't understood about installing Firefox and Thunderbird to a WXP system?
I've done it! It works well. My WXP updates are up to date !!!

Then would you mind explaining how then please, seeing as Firefox doesn't use ActiveX controls, which are required by Windows update?
If you are using the ActiveX plugin, you might as well not bother using FF as you have compromised your security to the same extent as IE
