A Very Mysterious Problem
      #181874 - Sat Apr 23 2005 08:40 PM

I always use FF and now have version 1.0.3

However, this is being typed on IE 6 as i am finding a most annoying problem in FF.

Whenever I type something, nothing appears for a couple of seconds and my mouse keeps sticking and not scrolling smoothly. I thought it was the batteries in my wireless mouse and keyboard and so I changed them...but still had the problem.

Here I am in IE and the typing flows ( if not the spelling) and my mouse behaves impeccably.

Can anyone advise what I may have done to cause such problems in FF??

I would like to be able to go back there..but cannot stand the frustration.

Does it do this if you use Firefox in Safe Mode? There should be a shortcut in the Start Menu for this. If you have a great many extensions installed it can slow FF down. Sometimes one particular extension can cause trouble. Safe Mode loads the browser without them.

Also, it's not guaranteed to cure the problem but many of Firefox's glitches can be cured by creating a new profile. If any major version updates are installed, such as from 0.9 to 1.0, it is best to delete the existing profile and create a new one.

Bookmarks and any customizations (user.js, userChrome.css, any changes made in the chrome folder) are stored in the Profiles folder, so those files would need backing up before deleting the folder. Any installed extensions are also kept there, so they need reinstalling when creating a new profile.

I always back up the entire 'C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Application Data\Mozilla' folder and then delete it completely. A new Mozilla folder gets created by FF the next time it starts.

Creating a new profile can be a bit of a 'cure-all' for many Firefox problems.

It didn't happen in safe mode. Then I disabled my extensions:

Foxy Tunes
Spellbound
Googlebar

The only one I left was was tabbrowswer preferences and I have to say the problem of typing not appearing immediately seems to have stopped.

I have saved my profile, but am still scared to delete it in applications...if that has not caused the problem, shall I leave well alone?

If all is working well and you are not comfortable about deleting/creating a profile, it would be fine to leave it at that. Perhaps re-enable the disabled extensions one by one to see which is causing the problem. There may even be an updated version of it.

It is a bit of a step to hit the delete button on the profiles folder ...and quite a nice surprise when you find that Firefox really does create a brand new one for you the next time it starts. The bother (although not that much bother) comes with building all the things into the new profile that you had in the old one.

Sooner or later, most Firefox users will perhaps need to create a fresh profile. When the time comes, some information about it can be found here

I've got almost the same extensions as you, except that I haven't got Foxy Tunes and I haven't had the same problem.
Thanks for the link about creating a fresh profile, mart.
