After ringing BT to find out when I am likely to get their free speed ugrade to 2Mb, I was told that because I live 6km from the nearest exchange I can only get the 1Mb service. If I lived 3km away, the 2Mb service would be fine because the line could handle it. Not being too 'up' on this sort of thing, can anyone tell me if they are telling me porkies?

Thanks, that looks a useful website. It tells me the I am 2.32km (straight line) away from my exchange, not the 6km that BT told me.

Thanks for the link. My exchange isn't BB enabled yet, but I'll try what it says in your link when it is in a couple of month's time. Madeline.

BT are correct that the further the distance you are from the exchange the slower the maximum speed of the service becomes.
Ignore anything that says you're x distance away from the exchange (straight line) - BT will be referring to the length of the cable, and cables dont go in a straight line from the exchange to your home - they take longer routes to follow roads, and to allow the cable to serve the maximum number of homes possible to keep costs down.

Well, that's really cheered me up! With the long and twisting country lanes round here, I'm probably too far from the exchange ever to have a decent BB connection. Madeline.
