CD - Rom problem
      #174484 - Thu Mar 31 2005 03:36 PM

Hi there I wonder if you could help me out with this rather puzzling problem.
I have a 2 year old windows xp, I loaded a CD rom for my 6 year old, and was running fine, until she told me it had stoped working! I asked her what happened and she replied some words came onto the screen, and then it went straight back to the desktop.
I re-loaded the CD Rom again, and it did'nt recognised the CD at all, I also tried 2 other CD's, and it still seem's not to recognise them, HELP! have you any idea what has gone wrong, any help will be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance su

Try using a cd cleaner, it may be just dusty. Otherwise try changing the cd rom drive they are pretty cheap right now. Hope this helps

Help!! Ive used the advise above, and bought a cd Rom cleaner, which was a voice guided cleaning system, it took me through the procudure's of cleaning, and activated the windows multi media player.
After using the disc... I inserted a normal CD ROM, and this message popped up ( NO CD-ROM DRIVE FOUND), does this mean the driver is crackered, if so, why did the cd cleaner activate the mulit media player?.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.. thanks in advance.

Sounds like it's knackered. Why not buy something like this

It's literally a question of taking the old one out and slotting the new one in.

Thanks for your reply!! you have just confirmed what I was starting to think.. is it a easy process to remove the old cd rom drive, as this would be my first attempt to removing anything, and if so are all drivers the same, when it comes to buying one??... Thankyou again in advance.

You will be able to disconnect the cable from the back, undo the screws and pull it out. Then do the reverse with the new one and XP will do it's "Found New Hardware" stuff and you're off. Buy something like Nero, which you can pick up for a few quid and you have yourself and spanking new CD writer for around £20.

Cheer's Richie P for your advise, its a great help!! when I come to install the new cd driver, do I start from the back of the tower, and then work from there... its a first for me, I just want to make sure that any mistakes can be avoided, I will look for the Nero, whilst on my quest!!.

Many thanks again minniemouse

Obvious thing first, make sure it's disconnecetd from the power.

Take the sides off the tower and disconnect the cables from the back of the CD drive. Try to remember where they go, though it will be obvious.

Remove the screws on each side holding it in place, probably 4 of them.

Slide it out of the front.

Do the opposite with the new one.

Another question. Is this the only CD drive? You will probably need to set the jumper in the back to Master if it is. Check the set up on the one you take out and copy it. It will be 2 rows of pins with a small piece of plastic pushed over some of them.

Have a look at Amazon or Ebay for Nero. However, check that you are getting a version that will write CD's, not just the OEM version.

Edited to say I just found this site for more help.
