XP without Windows Media Player
      #174024 - Tue Mar 29 2005 07:27 PM

XP is to be sold without Windows Media Player in the bundle (Due to legal arguing)Do you think it will make any difference? and b) Will it be cheaper?
I doubt it (I'd download the Player from Microsoft anyway)
Its going to be called Windows XP "N" in future (N= No media player)here's the latest on Google news

1 question, is if they are going to supply windows without media player then are they going to charge for it in future or make windows cheaper you can bet they will eventually strip windows down to the bare minimum to run a PC and keep the price the same as well as charge for the extras you wish to download.

In order to comply with the court ruling Windows will come with the option of no WMP. However no mention was made of cost in the original ruling, so Micro$oft will charge the same for both versions - not fair but impressive as far as working the angles is concerned.
P.S. Check the link - may be one too many many /

Do you think retailers will cut prices if the 2 editions both cost the same or will they not disclose that 1 edition has no mediaplayer citing the "L" means "Latest" so it the best version to have
Newbies to buying Computers are going to be Conned by this
They won't be aware that the non "L" brand is the Full featured editon(for the same price)
Let's hope the dealers point this out(and stock the original edition)?

As someone without a Micro$oft axe to grind YET, given the choice of a system with or one without for the same price - difficult choice ... NOT. Until you are aware of the options re: freeware, why go for the without option. It's a steep enough learning curve as it is! And given the HDD size, It doesn't matter if you leave it unused.
As to what the retailers will do:
Choice A) What Micro$oft wants.
Choice B) What makes them the most profit.
Choice C) What their staff can get their heads around.
If Micro$oft offers the two choices for the same price, as it seems they will, why would retailers subsidise this? It seems a good selling point, get this version for the same price as that one but with a Media Player already installed - Owt For Nowt!
