but were modems not designed to do this in the first place, b4 the net surely there were ways of directly connecting to another comp on the other side of the world/country/city ? so why is this now impossible?

I second that. Perhaps you can help us out, Iain (or anyone)?
I too believed that it was possible to send at least a plain text file if nothing else, using a direct 'phone link between two "modem equipped" computers almost as if it were part of a LAN, thus bypassing all that internet stuff.
I think I'm right in saying that it was certainly possible in the days of the old "8 bits", not such a distant memory for me, having stuck with my old Commodore 64 until the disc drive finally packed up only about 4 or 5 years ago.
Wish I could get another drive. There's wanted files "trapped" on the old 5¼ inch floppies, and more modern 5¼ inch drives can't read the 35 or 37 track Commodore format (I'm forgetting which it is now. Must be getting old). I suppose I'll have to either give up on them or go to e-bay eventually.

I suppose you could use telnet
Otherwise, you would have to learn a complex set of protocols based around the earlier forms of packet switching, highly inefficient and to be honest way beyond me.
The internet is based around some of these principles but presented in a recognisable format to you and I

Thanks Puta. That seems to make sense, and in my own case there wouldn't be any point not using the internet anyway. Perhaps the original poster (sorry - didn't make a note of your name) should recommend that his friend sign up to one of the free ISPs. It'll probably be cheaper than non-internet call charges anyway.

Not only that I don't think telnet could communicate at much above 9600baud in which case it would take forever to do anything substantial. It was primarily a LAN rather than a WAN protocol

I was going to suggest PCAnywhere (from Symantec) - albeit at a price. But on having a shufty around I came across this comment, which may be of innerest;
"I first installed this software (PCAnywhere) on windows 2000, and it allowed me to work at home for the first time (on a Virtual Private Network) - I was very impressed, despite some problems with the mouse wheel, and system keys like ALT+Tab.
However, after installing XP, I found the built in remote-desktop to be far superior, and I have not used pcAnywhere since."

Trouble is that you need and IP address, and to get one of those you need to be on the Internet

I just thought it was possible and as he lives with his paranoid mother who will not let him have an internet connection i thought i might atleast be able to link up to his computer via my home phone to play games, oh well, it's obviously not possible thanks anyway

Looks like a dead end here then. Pity about that, but as they say there's nowt so queer as folk. Funny animals, people.
I can understand his mother's paranoia though, but could he justify an unmetered connection? I use Tiscali daytime at only £4.99 a month for unlimited access Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm. That's why I'm never here evenings or weekends.
