Is it just a forum or is there a web site to go with it?

Simple answer is build a site to go with it. You've got to have good interesting and regularly updated content to bring people to the site and then on into the forums to discuss whatever the subject of the site is.

With just a forum why would people want to join? I've just stumbled across your forum. What is there on my screen that grabs my attention and makes me want to investigate deeper? What makes your site different from all the others?

Why don't you make it a roleplay forum, I have seen a couple of succesful forums liek that, quite a large harry potter one where you got to pretend to be wizards at hogwarts and stuff. That way you won't need a website because people will go to the forum for the forum itself, does mean quite a bit of work though, and you might not think roleplay forums are serious enough.
