I've recently bought a second hand laptop and when I've tried to connect to the internet via my service provider (UK Online) the modem connects and I get a message saying "UK Online now connected". The problem is that it will not display any of the web pages, and it suggests I have to set it up to "automatically detect settings" which I have done but still no joy. The laptop used to access the internet fine before I got it, because I've witnessed it working. The only thing is the laptop could've been used on a LAN connection. Can anyone help please?

If you get the message 'UK Online now connected' it suggests that you should now be able to surf. What happens when you open Internet Explorer?

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really? Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

It just says that the web page cannot be displayed. It suggests that I tick the box to 'Detect network settings', but that is done. Also I don't seem to be able to hear that my computer is online when I lift my telephone.

Make sure you have your status bar showing at the bottom of your browser:
On top menu bar View Status bar (ticked)
Now when you d/click an icon, maybe IE, or a favorite you have saved, or have an address in the address bar and you press either the 'go' button or the 'Enter' to connect to that site, what exactly does the Status Bar say?
It hopefully will show: 'Opening page http://www.whatever.*****'. or 'Finding site . . . wating for reply', something like that.
If it only shows: www.whatever.*****' . . . . it won't connect.
I'm afraid I don't have a solution to this, but it will give others perhaps a little more information to diagnose your problem.
Best of luck.

You may have already done this, but when you click on File, does it say Work Online?

I seem to have got it sorted, I did all you suggested but still no joy. So what I did was reset my internet explorer settings and it now works. Thanks to everyone who has helped, it was really appreciated. Only problem I have now is that I the laptop has loads of adaware/spyware viruses. What is the best free removal tool?

Click on this link for loads of free stuff. I run both Spybot and Ad-aware, hopefully what one misses the other catches. Spybot tutorial. Ad-Aware tutorial.
While it is said that 'The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth', nobody guaranteed what state it would be in when they got it!

Another good, free program is a² Free. It's a malware scanner which will find and remove all kinds of malware from your PC. You can have a look at it and get it here. Madeline.
To err is human; to foul things up totally, you need a computer.

Thanks very much, I used spybot and ad-aware and they removed loads of threats. My laptop now accesses the internet fine, but I do have one more problem if anyone can help. Whenever I start my laptop, I get the following pop-up message: ZoneAlarm Pro is waiting for the True Vector Internet monitor to initialize. Cancel? Once I click cancel (otherwise the pop-up just sits there) Zone Alarm then doesn't seem to run properly. A program called VSMON.EXE seems to use alot of my memory ttoo and I think this is making it run sluggish.
