Save or Open Real Player
      #170593 - Wed Mar 16 2005 11:37 AM

Hi all
When i downloaded RealPlayer, it said "save" or "open", which one do i use & whats the difference?
I always tend to click "open" & it tends to work!

Open will run and install it once the download finishes.

Save does just that, then you have to run the .exe to install it.

Save is usually better if you're not sure about the program so you can run a virus scan on it before you run it.

.exe is an executable file that runs the program.

Realplayer will ask if you want it to be the default player for various file types when you install it. If you say yes it will open, rather than wmp, every time you click on a media file.

You can change it back to wmp if you prefer it.

when downloading something, if you click on RUN it will save it to a TEMPORARY FILE, which can get lost if you clear your temp files. if you want to keep the program click on SAVE, then you can direct it to where you want to store it, desktop,my documents etc.

Whenever i download something like Adaware or Spybot, i clicked on 'open' instead of save & it's been up there in my desktop since!
Howcome it hasn't been erased then if i didn't 'save' it, once i cleared 'temporary internet files'?

You probably mean the desktop icon. This is put there by the program as a quick way to start (launch) the program.

they aren't saved in temporary internet files, they are saved in temporary files in other locations like :-

c:\temp
c:\windows\temp
c:\documents and settings\{username}\local settings\temp

among other places.

if you clean these out, which is advised a lot of the time, because adware, malware etc just love hiding in them. you will find that all the programs you have clicked "run" on will be lost.

Right click on your Desktop and select New>Folder. Name this folder 'Program Downloads'. When you download a program, select Save and pick this folder as the destination.
Once the program has downloaded, open this folder and double click on the new icon. This will install the program on your computer. If you need to re-install for any reason, you don't need to download it again - as long as you don't delete the folder or icon.

In reply to:

So it don't matter where i put them

of course it does, if you posted a HJT log and one of you temp files was full of malware and i told you to delete everything in that folder, you would lose those programs because you clicked run instead of save. if you had saved it to a folder on your desktop like noviciate suggested, it's there for good.

if it's a program you want to keep click on save. if it is something you will only run once click run.

do the icons on your desktop have a little arrow in the bottom left hand corner, if so, that is only a short cut to the program.

have a look HERE

click START > RUN and in the address bar type %TEMP% click OK.

look in the folder that opens and see if avg, spybot etc are there. if they are you will have to move them to your hard drive. (c:\program files )

Does that work in XP? I get "Windows cannot find $TEMP%" when I try it in Start, Run.

It's a typo. You need to enter %TEMP%

the command is %TEMP% Brian inadvertantly put a $ when he meant a %
