Now I appreciate that Freeserve 56K Dial-up can slow especially so at 15:30 on a Sunday afternoon BUT is this getting ridiculous or what ...
I'm told I'm connected at 38.6Kbps but then I'm told that 99.9% evertime I dial up - today, like right now, ZDNet Bandwidth Test tells me it's really 12.3Kbps, 1.5 K bytes/sec !!!
I've downloaded several files this afternoon from freshdevices and here's the result:
Earlier around 1300:
1.53Mb file. Started out at transfer rate 78.40 KB/sec, estimated time left 21 secs then dropped each second until it reached 4.35 KB/sec. It took 5 minutes 48 secs.
1.20Mb file. Started out at same transfer rate and again dropped second by second until it reached 3.70 KB/sec. It took 4 minutes 56 secs.
741KB file. Started out at transfer rate 41.3 KB/sec, estimated time left 8 secs then dropped each second until it reached 4.60 KB/sec. It took 2 minutes 41 secs.
Now 1545:
1.53Mb file. This took 14 minutes 20 secs, transfer rate 1.82 KB/sec !!!
BEFORE I go squealing to BT and Freeserve, what else should I know besides 1) dial 17070 2) 151 line check 3) ask to be removed if on DACS 4) asking engineer to increase the "gain" ?
Thx
PS can't find that rolling about laughing-out-loud smiley face, never mind ... !

Those speeds are actually quite normal for dial up I'm afraid especially on a Sunday afternoon
Your dial up speed does seem a little low, but again time of day is everything

Can't help you with what else to ask BT/Freeserve but if you go here you'll find plenty of smilies, including rollin about ones.

We hear quite frequently about slow dial-up speeds, but we never hear what modems are being used. This would be helpful as some modems, especially older, are habitually slow anyway, Lucent modems for starters.

5kbps is about the maximum you'll get with dial up i'm afraid.

Just to echo the other replies, I think those speeds seem normal for dial-up. It's always slower at the weekends, I'm suffering with you I'm afraid
I..... want..... broadband....
