It's a little slow, on a dial up, one should expect between 43 on an average day and 51kbps on a very good day

I'd go here and check the line speed

If it is consistently bad here are a few things to try, if you use BT.
1. Unplug all telephone connections except one and dial 17070 (use prefix 1470 if your number is withheld).
2. Telephone the engineer on 151 and do a line check and/or speak to him/her. If the Internet is only connecting at 20,000-40,000 bps ask him/her if you are on DACS (means you are sharing a line). If you are on DACS ask him/her VERY NICELY to remove it as you need good access and you're paying good money.
You could also ask him/her to increase the "gain".

That's strange, whenever I check speeds, the 2 figures are within about 2Kbps of each other. I've just checked, there are 36.6 and 38.6Kbps.

I don't know what to suggest but you do need to do further investigative work, including contacting your ISP.

got in touch with bt they checked the line for me its ok, waiting to here back from tiscali. i noticed it seems to change speeds when i log on? like if i were to log on now then put mouse over symbol it would says 33.6kbps, then if i were to log of computer and come back on it would say 44kbps strange but true? but the other day i wanted a download for nero and found a site that did so so clicked download as you do then my tiscali dialer got cut off and went on to a diffrent dialler all together but i stoped this and deleted all known sources for this other dialer it was some sort of coputer download dialler ever heard of that happening? or is it just me ock well should hopefully get it sorted thanks to all who is helping. dont know what i would do without this forum :)

It's quite common to get differing speeds when using dial-up. If it's low just disconnect and try again.

As for another dialler taking over the connection, it's sounds as though you've been hijacked. This shouldn't happen.

I've had the same thing, Broxi. A while ago I was searching for drivers and made the mistake of following a link to www.drivers-pc.com. The first page told me they would download a premium rate dialler, so I left immediately, but the dialler was on my machine already, and within seconds my existing connection had been dropped.

It's something that they told me what was going to happen, and the dialler did uninstall cleanly, but it's annoying that firms like this can switch your connection before you've had chance to agree to it or not, and even more so when I hadn't even started to look for the driver I would have been paying so much for.

I suppose we expect porn sites and the like to carry on like that, but not supposedly reputable firms. I for one won't be going there again.

There is intelligent life on Earth, but I'm only visiting.
