DVD s
      #16285 - Wed Oct 15 2003 02:35 AM

Hi every one hope you are all Ok I have another Query I am hoping you can help me with , I have just had a DVD Drive installed as far as I can see its a IDE DVD DRIVE ROM 16K. Of course I will need some DVDs for it. I have had a look on the net and found some places that supply them but there are so many different types (both Writes and Rewrites) but I do not know which are compatable and/or recomended I want to get both types to test out, I found a couple of sites that produce a pack of 5 mixed ones but I have not found any IDE ones mentioned
The only other information I can find is on the box the drive came in as follows ARTEC the Brand I persume and a web address "www.artec-electronic.de" I tried that but got the page not found I also tried the the installation CD but there was no mention of the DVDs that are compatable on the pages there. hope someone can advise me many thanks Jim

It sounds as though you've just got a normal drive ie. read only. If this is the case you won't be able to burn disks.

Hi Bricat, Yes you are correct I was getting a bit mixed up with my CD Rom which is a rewrite sorry about the grey matter I get these spasams more often since I got the bus pass perhaps you can help me with another matter User names, I recently Registered as "travelman" and a new Password now as you can see my User Name is using a part of my Email address and a password of 13 digits that I do know what it is, It was working okay last week I have edited my profile and changed it back but it stays the same, I am not stuck unless I log out then I would not know my password
thanks

i know my password but it doesn't have 13 digits yet in my profile it shows 13 digits. and i ditch all cookies twice a week, so i have to use my password to log in. according to the welcome email you can change your password at any time.hopefully somebody will know a bit more about it.

Thanks Bricat, I thought that one could be able to Edit the the User name in the Profile Page as your suggesting I think but thats not working, I do know that during my registration I had a problem and in the end I had to E-mail the IPC editor Andrew Craig, he happens to be away until Monday so I will leave it until then. Cheers
thanks

Back to this DVD-ROM drive. You've probably realised by now that you can play DVD films in it as well as using computer DVDs, but that you can't create your own.

You didn't seem to understand the IDE bit. That's to do with the way it's connected inside the computer, and nothing to do with the discs themselves.

I tried your Artec URL, and it's definitely not working. Try http://www.artecusa.com/.

Now for the difficult bit. Your password. Once you're logged in, go to User Options and change it from there. Mine's shown as 13 digits too, so I suppose that's a security feature. Don't forget to go down to the bottom of the screen and click on "Submit" or the change won't be saved. That should solve your immediate problem, but you won't be able to change your user name.

As I understand it though, what you really want to do is get back to being Travelman. For that I'd suggest you go into "Forum Information" and click on either Paul Lomax or Andrew C (click on the name, not the post). That will take you into that person's profile, and from there you'll be able to send him a PM explaining the problem.

That's probably not the "right" way of doing it, but I think you'll find them helpful. Just be careful to explain the problem as clearly as possible and you'll probably get the solution e-mailed to you, whether it's a new password or something else.

If it is a new password, it's worth using copy and paste to avoid any confusion over similar characters, then once you've logged in, you can change it to something memorable, and it doesn't really need to be ultra secure for something like this. It's not like a banking site after all, even though it can be more valuable in a lot of ways.

If you want to return to being Travelman just log out and then go to log in again. Enter Travelman as your user-name and then click on the Send password reminder or forgotten password link (can't remember exactly the wording of the link, but you'll see the one I mean).

This will send out an email to you with a temporary password. Once logged in go to your User Options and change the password to something you can remember.

Hi Barney you are correct about me not understanding about the DVD as I am not gend up on music etc. I have not had time to try that web site you gave me but will tonight. so as I now understand it although I have not been able to try as i have no blank DVDs would I be able to copy to the DVD from my PC.
Regards the User Name as I said n my last Post I had to contact the Editors before (see last Post) I know Andrew is away but I emailed Paul Lomax yesterday waiting for a reply Cheers Barney

No. You won't be able to copy anything to a DVD, so keep your money in your pocket where it belongs. It's a DVD-ROM, which means "Read Only" in the same way as it does with a CD-ROM.

You can watch films or use computer DVDs, magazine coverdiscs for example, but that's it. You'd need a DVD writer (DVD-R) or rewriter DVD-RW to make your own DVDs.

Hope that makes sense.
