how do i start creating a website?!
      #161754 - Tue Feb 15 2005 02:18 PM

I've just started my own company and want to create a website for it. The company is non-web based, so all i need is a few simple pages that can provide some basic info on our products (inc pictures) and contact details etc...

I'm pretty compter/web literate from the user point of view, and have done some programming in C++ type applications in the past.

However, this whole setting up a web site thing (which everyone says is really easy!!) seems to be a bit of a minefield. Who do i use to register my domain name (which I've already checked is free)? Who do i use to host it? Do i need to pay the web host for an e-mail address? etc...

I basically need advice on who to use, how much i should be paying and preferably i need a host that includes an application to actually create the site content. where do I start please?!!

Thanks in advance!

Dean.

Before you think of paying for hosting there are many packages avaliable some for free and some included with domain registration.
My site for example is registred with www.123reg.co.uk which cost £2.99 for a .co.uk domain for 2 years. My site is hosted on www.hostultra.com for free. Look around for some good free sites as if you do not expect a lot of traffic you might be better off with them.
It is a good idea to look at www.w3schools.com which has tutorials from HTML basic to advanced PHP, CGI, etc coding for free.
This page is the best place to start http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

To make the webpage you can either use an application like Notepad and just type in the code or you can use a WYSIWG (What You See Is What You Get) editor like Dreamweaver. You can download a free trial of Dreamweaver from www.macromedia.com. (Dreamweaver is also able to show you code at the same time so you get the best of both worlds)

To see how you site is coming along you can use your browser to see the saved pages.

My advice is to look around for the best deals, especially for hosting when it comes time to pay for it. Look at reviews and google the name to see what people think.

Good luck, and PM me if you need more help

Can we keep all the help on the forum for others to share, PM'ing isn't really the nature of the site and doesn't contribute anything to the archive...

I agree with trying your own html . I found a very good tutorial free on www.cwru.edu/help/wilbur. If you are happy with C++ you should find html easy. It is also less complicated than the html produced by the automatic and easier to mend.

Sorry to jump in on somebody elses thread, but if I create a website with forms, will Hostultra be able to email them to me or will it hold them so I can collect it? Or will this cost me to do that? I registered the domain name with 1 and 1 but hosting costs money. Can I forward the domain if I use Hostultra to host?

Thanks
