Any chance, given many people have bought new pc's and have the old one sat there at home, redundant and feeling pensioned off,,,,, of having a Networking forum, so we can spend many hours banging our heads against the wall trying to get the old and new computers talking to each other, aided here with a little help from our friends? I think it would be a lot of frustrating fun.( how many worms can there be in a can? ) My humble suggestion! Egg

That's not a bad idea, I must admit the general forum is VERY general

I'd like to know whether it's possible to connect my old Commodore 64 up to this nice new (only 2½ years old anyway) machine to transfer text files rather than have to type them all in again.
It won't happen until I get a replacement floppy drive for the Commodore, but there's about 300,000 words trapped on 5¼ inch floppies, and my poor old arthritic fingers will probably drop off if I have to do it all the hard way.
Before someone says "print it and scan it", I can't, not having any Commodore compatible printers left. The last one I did have, a Brother HR40 daisy wheel, took 2 minutes to print a page anyway, so it would probably be quicker to type it in.

Thanks for that, Puta. I've bookmarked it for when I get a 1541/1571 drive.
I've still got a 486 sitting about doing nothing, and now it looks as if I've found a use for it at last.

Missed it! What a pity I didn't come here first. Only £16 too (including £8 p&p). There'll be others though. I've been waiting long enough.
I keep meaning to look at e-bay, but never seem to get round to it. If anyone sees anything similar, I'd be grateful if you could let me know. PMs are always welcome and usually dealt with first.
Thanks for trying.

Barney, have you got a small computer shop near you? I ask because these small places are really good at finding old hardware.
My local shop has found me several dot matrix printers very cheap (there getting quite pricey now as they are collectible). He also found a 5 1/4" drive for me last year which I used to build a small robot.

That's an idea, Jonny. I wouldn't have thought of that. There used to be several near here, and that's where I learned that it's about as difficult to find an honest secondhand computer shop as it is to find an honest estate agent, but you don't really want to hear about the crooks I've met.
If I can get one that works at the right price it doesn't matter how honest they are though. Trouble is the s/h computer shops seem to be disappearing in this area (I'd like to think it's because they were run by a bunch of crooks). I'll have a look round in case any have survived, and I go to Brighton pretty regularly, so there should be a good chance of finding something there.
... which I used to build a small robot ...
No. I'm not going to shout at you for destroying a floppy drive to build a robot. It's just that I've always fancied doing something like that. There never seems to be enough time though. One idea of mine was something that, initially, could track the sun, and then, once the bugs had been ironed out, to modify it as one component of a line-of-sight optical communication system that would line itself up (perhaps with a bit of guidance) and then effectively lock on to a voice modulated light source. Just a toy really, but with serious possibilities.
While I'm here I'd like to thank Greysts and Paddy for their PMs with links to separate Commodore 1541 drives on ebay. At least one of them looks promising, but I'll probably run out of time on the second one.
I've replied to you both, and I'll post here (I've bookmarked the thread) when I'm sorted. Thanks again to everyone for your input on this.

Just thought I'd let everyone know who helped with my search for a Commodore floppy drive that I found one on ebay today. There's still 6 days+ to go, but so far at least I've got the highest bid (£6), and I'll be checking again close to the deadline.

There's no guarantee that it works, or even that I'll get it, but it's looking promising.
Thanks again, everyone. If I do get it, and if it works, I'll PM the people who PM'd me, just to let you know the search is over.

Barney, you may have already done this but if you really want to purchase this article, instead of making a single bid, authorise Ebay to bid up to your maximum in increments of say £1. That way at least you will not be outbid until you reach your limit.

Thanks for that, Joe. I didn't know you could do that. I'll look into it tomorrow.
I suppose I ought to register for PayPal too, but I couldn't get into the "more info" page earlier today, so that will have to wait until tomorrow. Got to get out to the shops in a few minutes.

Good idea Barney, its very useful as its not advisable to give out your credit card details to people you don't know and its too slow sending cheques etc. Another one is fast pay and I notice sellers use that as well. There is actually no fee with either of these except a token amount when you register but it is refunded with your first purchase. The main thing to watch out for is to make sure the seller doesn't include an exorbitant surcharge for the privilege of using these cards and also watch the delivery costs and include them in your bid. One final thing is to read the sellers sales history and don't bid if you think he is dodgy.
Having said all that I've personally had better after sales service from Ebay sellers than some high street shops, (No names mentioned).
Joe.

I've had a look at the link and it looks OK. The seller of this item has a 100% favourable feedback from 314 users since she started using ebay in October 2001. That is an excellent record and suggests that you won't have any problems buying from her. She undertakes to refund your money if the goods are not as described. Because she has not tested it and it has no cables you will have to take a chance that it works. If it doesn't it's hard luck I'm afraid. Someone has already mentioned the last minute bidding race. You need to be on line about 30 minutes before the auction is due to end and keep on refreshing the page. If you win the auction it might be worthwhile putting an appeal on this forum for anybody who might be travelling in the Swindon area and could pick it up for you and perhaps deliver it. Royal Mail won't be cheap.

Some useful suggestions there. Thanks everyone. I was already planning to sit back and do nothing until shortly before the deadline, as Gesail advised and Greysts seconded.
Thanks for your input too, Joe. Very much appreciated. I've signed up with PayPal now. Still a bit confusing, but I'll work it out.
You're right about the postage, Greysts. It's pretty heavy, probably equivalent to about 4 housebricks, so it won't be cheap. I'd never have thought of asking anyone here to pick it up for me, but it's certainly something to keep in mind. It's sensitive to knocks as well (it affects the head alignment), so that could be the safer option if anyone's able to help.
I noticed the seller's 100% record, and I've got all the leads, so now I just hope I get it and that it works. If not, I'll just have to wait for the next one. Shouldn't be too long, and I've already been waiting something like 4 or 5 years, so a few more weeks shouldn't hurt.
Thanks again everyone.

I've spent all evening making Cat 5E cables, straight through and crossover, wired up two patch panels and 36 network sockets, configured 1 router and totally annihilated the TCP/IP settings on a Win 2K server
I'm not having any of my computers talking to each other tonight
