The single best directory to submit to is dmoz.org, which feeds Google and Yahoo amongst others. Yahoo directory is also held in high esteem by search engines, but they charge for listings.

The best way to get your site listed on the big 3 search engines (Google, Yahoo and MSN) is to get your site linked to by other well respected sites.

Hi Slapmat,Thanks for the feedback.I have been approached by a company and they are trying to charge me 250.00 Pounds to advertise on there webdirectory.
There address is http://www.askalix.com/uk/. I only originally submitted it for free.
I have no experience in this field but I think it way to expensive, you can get listed on Yahoo in 7 days time for 200.00 Pounds, splatmat what do you think on this deal

No way I would never pay for that, You are best to go round doing link exchanges and having fresh content with unique keywords on your site.
