Gio Internet / Debt Collection agency involvement-

Debt Collection Agency Letters Mass mail out / Gio in trouble

Letter from Dept Collection received today - Ofcom to be involved
They finished last year with me no more payments taken from my credit card and no service. Even the website at the time was down. I guess they have been in trouble because prior to this they kept sending me emails asking for payment in advance for 12 month contracts. Get the money in and bobs your uncle. Any way Wescott Debt Collectors letter arrives today asking for money. Rang them up said that Gio had not followed up on situation I have to prove that I paid. Explained that they stopped taken payments not me and provided no service and I did not use them as moved to a decent company 'Pipex' Woman said dunno you have to prove it. I say Ofcom here we come lets sort these ****ards out quickly. Looking at other sites tonight I think they will go under and its probably the CVA advisor or Liquidator thats pulling the strings. Its a tough old world out there at the moment!

Hi,
My friend and I have also recieved letters from westcot credit services requesting £111.96 and £239 respectivily, we both used the gio ISDN package for a year then cancelled by letter. This was back in March 2003, gio stopped taking the money from us so we thought that was the end of it.
I have just come off the phone to wescot who say i have to prove i cancelled the service, who keeps copies of letters from over a year ago?
If they had not recieved our cancellation letters and were trying to request payment, how come they never wrote to us like any other business would requesting payment, this would of alerted us that they had not acted on our cancellation letters.
What if any is the best course of action for my friend and I?
Thank you in advance for any advice.
Merry Xmas.

Add me to the list, request for payment from Wescot for £322.15 which equals my 17 months with GIO at £18.95 (and is therefore incorrect as it went up to £19.95 last May).

Fortunately I have all of my old bank statements so I can prove that I have paid but I am flaming mad at having to do this in the first place.

Needless to say GIO have so far been uncontactable by phone or email.

A pity really, as otherwise I have had no problems at all with their service.

I got one too. Unfortunately the letter they sent was misplaced, and I've been unable to track down the phone number for Westcot anywhere on the net.

Can someone post the number which the letter says you're supposed to call so I can sort it.

Cheers in advance!

G1 4PL
0141 300 5300
0141 300 5301 fax

and the Hull address is :-

I hope this helps.

Thank you :) On the letter I received it was an 0870 number. I'm guessing that it routes to that destination though, they just want to get paid for the calls! Typical huh!

I'm still mad about this. Is there anything we can do? I'm sure I don't owe them anything! Bloody scams.

A Demand for £30 arrived in the post this morning. From Gio Internet and Westcot Credit Services Ltd. - (Dedt. Collectors)
I never heard of Gio Internet, but I used to be with Activeware. So I searched Google and I think the two are connected.
The problem that was with Activeware was stupid really. It was good for the first three months but then they stoped taking the monthly debit from my account. I rang and got a scottish girl. She said it was my Debit Card number that was wrong.
There's 18 digit's on my Bank of Ireland switch card, she said there should only be 16 digit's. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, my card has been used lots of times to purchase items on the internet with out any problems. She was so thick or what ever computer program was in front of her was.
I left that day, (July 04). I'm now with FireflyUK (150hrs amonth dail-up for £13.99 & good service) Now at christmas I get this demand from the Scottish SCAMERS.
Someting needs to be done about them (I read a report Gio is £220,000 in debt)
Wescot's Tel. No's on the letter - Recovery Office. 08709020562 & Priority No. 08709020562

Hi,

I've just got off the phone with a representative of Westcot, following the advice of another poster who recommended asking them to provide proof of debt which would put the case temporarily on hold.

The nice lady on the phone agreed to do this and passed on the info that apparently GIO went bankrupt two days after they were asked to send the notices out, which I would make the 22nd December, also the only means of contact that Westcot now have with GIO is via the web address as the phone line is now dead.

This may be sneeky but if you have told them on the phone that you sent a letter cancelling the service then just write out a letter photocopy it and send them it they will probably say oh yes we found the letter. Worked a few times for the wife

I have had a Wescot Debt Collection, letter for £15.98 , on 22/12/04..

I have printed out a current statement of my dial up service from Gio (via the users control panel) and it shows that they have recieved payment up until 10/1/05, this has been sent to Wescot (by recorded Delivery) .

Looking at other websites, it seems that alot of people are haveing the same "Christmas presents".

Gio does not answer the phone or their email.

How kind of Wescot to be putting the 'burden of proof' upon us at all, let alone at this very busy time of the year.

I too spoke to trading standards on Thursday 23 December, the day after receiving Wescot's letter (I needed time to have a think about the situation and to pull together all the necessary information about the so-called £50 'debt' I owed). Due to Xmas, of course, (and fair enough too!) TS couldn't put me in touch with an officer until Wednesday 29 December but as a result of his advice, I emailed Gio that afternoon, and wrote them by recorded delivery to cancel my account. A copy of this letter was also forwarded by recorded delivery to Wescot (no email address supplied). Royal Mail's website tracker confirms that both companies received my letters by lunchtime on Thursday 30 December!!! 'Proof' that for the time being the ball is out of my court.

From my own communications with Westcot they claimed that GIO had gone bankrupt a couple of days after the mass debt mailing was sent out.

Whether this is true or not I do not know however having phoned Westcot yesterday they confirmed that all of the GIO nonsense has been withdrawn and everyone who has previously received a debt notice should now receive a further letter withdrawing it.

Whether GIO will pursue matters through other means remains to be seen but hopefully they realise they have made an almighty mess of this affair and will do the decent thing. The revolver is in the library, gentlemen.

Re: Gio Internet / Debt Collection agency involvement- [Re: Matty8512]

I received a notice of debt collection from Wescot on 22nd of December. I immediately rang Wescot and informed them that I had never heard of Gio Internet until now, so what was this all about, they told me that I had been using Gio Internet services from 04/05/04 to 20/11/04. I told Wescot that I had always used Freeserve and had no problems whatsoever with them, I paid monthly direct debits to Freeserve and had no reason whatsoever to use Gio Internet services. The person at Wescot said I must take this up with Gio she gave me Gios telephone number and said but it is 10p per minute so it would be best to e-mail them, I did telephone first but got no reply so I e-mailed them and asked them to e-mail me, but received no reply. I then took a copy of the e-mail and forwarded this with a letter plus a years proof of my direct debit payments to Freeserve, I also sent copies of the direct debits and a copy of the letter that I had sent to Wescot to Gio they were both sent registered, I tracked the letters and found that Wescot had received my letter on 30th, but as yet the post office has been unable to deliver my letter to Gio. I am wary about Wescot, I am not familiar with debt collectors, but I would assume that there would be a reasonable amount of time given by them before they took action, the payment was required by 3rd January, from receiving the letter on the 22nd December this gave 12days and six of these were Christmas and bank holidays, so in actual fact we were given 6 working days. Also on the the debt collection form it states Wescot has a registered office at 64 Dalbar Road Ayr KA7 1UH, by looking at a map I found Wescot and Gio are both situated on the west coast and arn't far apart from each other. When there was such an uproar from us all Wescot soon turned tail and ran, are Gio and Wescot involved in this together. Yes Matty your right, Gio was registered from Madeira on the same day it was registered in Oldham, will report when I have the correct information.
