web-user reader since issue three. I am using a high spec machine 2000+ processor 80gb hd and 512mb I'm also using windows xp HE. I also have broadband 150kbs but I'm by no means a techie head. so I was wondering if you could help me? for about two weeks now I have not been able to download anything from the internet. at first I thought it must be the site I was using and just forgot about it. then maybe the next day I'd try another site and the same thing would happen again. when I click the link to download something I'd get about two bars on the progress bar then the whole page freezes. I have to press control, alt, delete to exit the page. this now happens to every time I try to download. I have looked at my settings and most things are ticked 'enable' (can you please tell me in Internet Options, Security Settings, Active X Controls and Plugins) which things should say enable, disable, or block. most of mine seem to be enable including file download. I spent last sunday talking to ntl and they said everything was all right at their end and that I should talk to my pc supplier (Time). I have one of those Total Care Gold packages and help is included in the price of £119.00 for the year. but although the young man was helpful he didn't solve my problem. he said I might have to put my re-load cd in. when I said I didn't know how to back up my files ( could you can help me there aswell. where do you put everything you want to keep before you put a re-load cd in) he gave me another number for Help and Tutorials. when I rang it was one of those pound per minute numbers lines and this fella had me changing this and that but at twenty three pounds I had to come off (being on incapacity benefit it is a lot of money to me) so my problem remains the same. P.s I am using a sygate firewall and Internet Explorer is ticked to allow. I need help with a capital H. any suggestion would be most appreciated. I've even restored my computer but it only seems to go back a week. and my problem is at least two weeks old. could even be longer. see what you can suggest for me lads before I have to part with more cash to get the experts in. thanks in anticipation mikey b

try this, tools/internet options/security/custom level. and make sure that " allow d/loads" is ticked.
Computers are like Old Testament gods; lots of rules and no mercy.

You might also try emptying your temporary internet files folder. Go to Tools, Internet Options and under the Temporary Internet files heading click on Delete Files. You could also have a look at the Settings button and see how much space is allocated to your Temporary files.

First of all, the best advice I can give is not to waste what little money you've got on premium rate numbers (I'm on long term incapacity benefit too - £155 a fortnight doesn't go very far does it?). Come here instead. None of us knows everything, but together we know a hell of a lot more than any one person on the end of a 'phone line. Nearly a thousand registered users to date, so if we can't help you, you'll have to reinstall.
The first thing I'd suggest is that you go into Control Panel, Add/Remove and select Internet Explorer (if it's in the list). Click on the button and you should be given the option to repair IE (I'm talking Win ME here, but I think it's similar on all versions).
File backups, assuming that hasn't solved your problem. I assume you've got a CD writer of some sort. If so, just stick everything on a CD. Don't forget any e-mails you want to keep. I paste mine into Notepad and save them as text files. Also your address book.
Keep a note of your internet settings as well. I'm on dial-up, so know nothing about BB. You probably know what they are anyway, and if not, someone will be able to help you.
Another possibility is that you've picked up something nasty. You've got a firewall, but what about Anti Virus and Spyware removers? Here's some useful freebies in case you haven't. Just click on the ones you need.
AVG Anti Virus AVG e-mail scanner Ad Aware Spybot Cookie Wall On line trojan scanner Spyware Blaster
I won't suggest "Hijack this!". I'll leave that to someone who's got a better understanding of it.
What I will say though is that you need to visit the Windows update site regularly, and always download the critical updates if nothing else, and make sure your Anti virus programme is updated at least once a week. That goes for anti spyware programmes too, but that's not quite as important. Spyware isn't normally as destructive as a virus.
There is intelligent life on Earth, but I'm only visiting.
