I have a Soundblaster 5.1 digital soundcard and Creative 5.1 speakers. The problem is when playing a MP3 there is no sound from the centre speaker. I used the Creative diagnostic software and all the speakers are working fine. Any ideas what is wrong?
Joe.

The centre speaker is for dialogue when watching a surround sound movie. For playing mp3's you only want stereo, so two speakers is correct.

I thought that was the case Nirvana but I wasn't sure. I checked with my high street shop where I made the purchase and with the Creative support and unlike you they did not give me a conclusive answer so I thought I'd ask here. Should have done that first.
Many thanks,
Joe.

Hello Nirvana,
I have now had a definitive answer on this question from Creative, It is entirely consistent with your earlier advice. Naturally they assume I'm using their player when in fact I'm using Winamp or Quintessential. I thought I'd let you know what they said:-
"Usually MP3 there shouldn't be a center channel sound out.
The center speaker will only play when you are playing a sound that has been encoded with a signal for the center speaker. Most sounds that you will play within windows are stereo. This means that they are encoded with left and right signals. Generally these sounds can be duplicated to the rear for 4 speaker output. Some sounds have an independent signal for each speaker.Typically only DVD's and some games support 5.1 output. If the sound you are trying to play does not have a center speaker signal encoded within the file, then the center speaker will not play. It may be possible to emulate a center channel which means the front left and right channels combine to produce sound in the center channel by enabling CMSS.
To enable CMSS: 1. Open PlayCenter 2 or 3. 2. In the upper right hand corner, click the "change to player view" button. If it opens in player view, then skip this step. 3. Right click the player and select PC2-Blue (Default) as the skin. 4. Expand the player view by clicking "open tray window" to the left of the EAX button. 5. Next, click CMSS and select "stereo enhancement," "movie," or "music" mode, depending on which you are given."
Well I guess that clarifies the matter pretty well.
Thanks Nirvana,
Joe.
