Good morning all. Have a question regarding my father's Virgin 24.7 ISP account. For the past 24 hours he can't get connected. He's spoken to the Virgin people and they've not been able to help him either. When he tries to log in, it dials up 10 times then says "line busy". He has three different 0808 numbers but none of them seem to be working. Virgin don't have a service status connection on their website (grrrrr at ISPs who don't do this). Does anyone have any ideas what he can do to get back online or any other 0808 virgin numbers he can try. Many thanks for any help and advice.

Have a look at some of the main connection issues here
If he has call waiting on his phone, or 1571 (?) then it might be worth checking the dial tone to make sure that it is the standard one or that he hasn't any messages, I know that can sometimes interfere with dial up connections

Sorry everyone - he seems to have sorted it out now. My guess is that Virgin had problems. Please ignore this thread! Thanks.

Thanks Iain, I couldn't find that on Virgin's website!! Will read and keep that link and send it to my father too. Thanks again.

I just thought it would be worth mentioning that if 1571 is enabled and you have a message you will get an intermittent dial tone. To get round this make sure the 'wait for dial tone before dialling' option isn't checked within the Dial Up options.

Thanks for your advice too Jonny. No, my dad doesn't have call waiting/1571 on his phone. He seems to be ok with getting connected to Virgin now (phew!). At 77 years young, he's only just joined the "net" and although he won't admit it, I'm sure he fiddles about here and there ("I've not touched anything", he says!), but I've been able to sort out any other problems he's had!!

I had the same problem with Freeserve once, but that never fixed itself, which was why I ditched them.
I'd been on "pay as you go", and decided to sign up to "home time". No point going into my usual "BT together" rant here. That's another issue.
Freeserve. I had my first three months with them as a paying customer, then at the stroke of midnight one night the connection was dropped. Turned out they'd cancelled my account after taking the money for the next 3 months. They wouldn't admit it though, and it took about 6 months to (a) get my money back and (b) stop BT charging for a service I was no longer able to use.
I understand both Freeserve and BT have made some changes since then, but as far as I'm concerned, Freserve remains a swear word.

I've heard nothing but bad reports about Freeserve. In fact, tried to sign on to Freeserve for my father (chosing F/Serve because of their special offer), I had nothing but problems and gave up after about 10 attempts. I put him on Virgin's ISP via recommendation and he's had no problems til yesterday (which as I said was probably something Dad did!). Have to say my son uses NTL's 24/7 for £10 p.m. and that is excellent - no problems at all in connecting to the net and excellent value too. I'm happy with NTL's b/band (there's a reason I haven't connected both comps to the b/band at present but hope to do so in future when we move.)

Morning Blackpoolrock! I think its also luck in how good an ISP works. Maybe different servers in different towns work better??

A couple of days ago, someone posted that V21 were making some kind of improvement, but since then, my son has managed to get on line first time every time. So, I really do wonder what if anything has been done, or is it purely coincidence.

Looked at Virgin for Bband and looked away quickly when I reviewed them on adsl.org.uk !! Slow speeds , poor quality service etc etc & hundreds of users complaining about it!! One post suggested that the SE has 2 servers - a slow one and a decent one!! Its Pipex for me I think - tho im sure they will probably dip in the monthly speed test now Ive decided!!
He came - he saw - he conkered!!!

NTL 24/7 for £10 a month seems like a good deal, and I think Tesco's are doing something similar (other enormous shops are available as they say on the BBC ).
I'm on Tiscali Daytime at £5 a month. Hardly ever need a redial. Good connection speeds, though it can be a bit variable at times. 2 hour cut off, of course, but it doesn't always happen.
Twice the money for unlimited access does seem like a good deal though, but I do need to get some sleep occasionally, so I'll stick with what I've got for a bit longer.
We've all done it. "I'll just go on line for a couple of minutes", and six hours later we're still there, eylids propped open with matches, trying not to snore. If the temptation's not there, I can't give in to it.

Im on Freeserve and i have no problems, they have released a program that rings another number if the line is busy automatically, so im fine with them. I have a friend thats with Virgin and he has had no internet for about 8months. They said they were updating there servers and it should only take 2months but that was 5months ago, also the virgin site is down. Strange

I've just got to chuck my tupence worth in here,
Loads of folk seem to dislike Freeserve - but I love them. I joined Freeserve anytime about 6 weeks ago and had NO probs. I kept it for about 3 weeks, but I really craved for more speed so I moved to Freeserve 512K broadband and I'm in the poundseats now. I've had a 576k connection since day one and I'm DELIGHTED. It's definately a case of "different strokes for different folks"

"I've had a 576k connection since day one and I'm DELIGHTED."
It will always say 576 but you need to do a speed test to get your correct speed results. I regularly get an average of 472 (505 inc. overheads) downstream & 243 (262 inc. overheads) upstream. So you are right though, speed is good with Freeserve.
