Peer to Peer Sharing
      #13008 - Tue Sep 30 2003 09:28 PM

I am a new internet user and really want to get into sharing. Does anyone know the pros and cons, the best software and how safe they are.

What software to use depends on what you want to share and leech. Most popular choice for music and films would be kazaa lite (which contains no spyware). My personal favourite at the moment is bit torrent, which I normally get good speeds from. Another good one is emule. The pros are self explanatory, the cons are getting caught with copyrighted material on your pc. I won't get in to a debate on the rights and wrongs of P2P, I leave that to the morals of the individual.

thanx for the suggestion. I actually went to the Kazaa website and was scared off by people on their own website ripping it apart saying it was full of virus's etc etc. It just made me think of how 'safe' this was. thanx for the suggestion anyway.

Don't get confused between Kazaa and Kazaalite. I did until the worthies on this forum put me right. Kazaa is full of nasties. Kazaalite is nastie free! Puta says so, so it must be true!

I found that on WinMX that the interface needs a bit more work. I also would like to know why on earth you can't instantly download whatever you find?

I use imesh. Yes there are a lot of advertisements, but i haven't had any problems.
I don't think there is any spyware on board and I don't pick anything up on HijackThis or SpyBot.

Of course I could be mistaken b/cos I still need a translation for the scans but IMHO i would recommend imesh to anyone. There is a large user base albeit varying and you can always find whatever you are looking for.

If you want advice as to which P2P programs ARE spyware free, have a read of this Spywareinfo article

I do say I have to disagree to a degree with article writer about kazaalite. IMHO, Sharman might realise that there would be far more legitimate users of kazaa if spyware wasn't bundled with it

if you only upload from users that have adsl or cable or faster you can sometimes get a good speed it also depends what the user is doing with his computer, if he is d/loading 6 files and has 3 users uploading from him at the same time you will not get a very good speed.

Always go for downloads from multiple users. You can adjust the bandwidth throttles, but I wouldn't recommend this unless you are really confident with what your doing. If your on a dial-up connection use a secondary connection and if on broadband use a primary connection.
