I have some audio files, downloaded from a radio station. They have a .ra file designation and I cannot play them on Windows Media Player and therefore can't burn the to CD.
Can anyone recommend a source for a free conversion programme?
Thanks.

These are Real Audio files. You can get a real audio alternative player Here

Not sure whether the player Nirvana suggested will help with burning the files. Apologies to Nirvana if I'm wrong though.
I searched for ages for a freeware conversion programme for "Real" files, but couldn't find one. Some people suggested "Streambox Ripper" but that doesn't work on this type of file any more.
In the end I settled for Wisecroft Ripper. It costs about $20, but I've had my money's worth out of it.
You can download a free trial version that will convert half the track so you can get an idea of how well it works on your particular files.
Hope that helps, and if anyone does know of a freeware conversion programme, I'd be interested in hearing about it, even though I've already got something that does the job. Why settle for one when you can have two?

This is the only possible solution i could find, which converts to .wav files, although they are much larger than mp3's so you may have to convert twice if space is a problem.

Thanks for that one, Nirvana. Always helps to have an alternative, just in case. I've got just one .rm file that Wisecroft Ripper can't convert, so it could be worth finding out whether this freebie can do something with it.

dBpowerAMP converter - an essential pice of freeware in my opinion - will convert your Real Audio files to whatever format you want. You have to have Real Player installed on your machine for it to work. dBpowerAMP works by adding the codecs you want. There are codecs for all different formats eg WMA, mp3, ogg, AIFF, CDA etc Basically the more codecs you have, the more formats you can convert to and from. After you get the converter you simply get the codec for Real files and whenever you want to convert all you need do is right-click your file and then choose what format you want the output to be (this will depend on the codecs you have chosen). The great thing about this is that it works with Real Video files and mpeg files too - it simply takes the audio of it. You can even make your own Real files.
You can find out all about it here: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

Thanks for that, Fortune Cookie, and apologies to Nirvana for not getting back before now.
I did try the one you suggested, Nirvana, but no luck. Seems there's something about low bitrate files that sometimes stops them converting properly.
Another idea that could be worth considering for radio downloads though is, instead of downloading the files, why not try recording "off air"?
I've currently got a connection between my stereo and the PC to (very slowly) transfer my vinyl LPs to CD. The lead's in place, so there's no reason, apart from any copyright considerations, why I shouldn't use the same connection to record radio broadcasts should I so desire.
Just a suggestion. Perhaps it will help somebody.
