I am interested in having Linux as an OS, as well as Windows. I was just wondering, is there any way that at start up, it asks you what OS you want to boot?

Yes. You can "dual-boot," which means every time you turn on your computer (called "booting it up"), you will be asked whether you want to start Windows or Linux (or any other Operating Systems you may have).
You can also run Windows from inside Linux, using special software.
If you simply wish to get to your Windows files, that's easy, too. Many Linux programs can read and write standard Windows files.

just to let you know that even if you set up linux 100% correctly and have your system set up as a dual boot, it can cause the windows partition to be unbootable.

franco the live cds are around 750mb and the full versions are normally two cds sometimes three so downloading on dial up is out of the question.
You can buy linux on cd for around £5 online, do a search on google for uk linux retailers.

OK, I found the free OS I want. I have decided to put it on a CD so I can boot from it. It's at http://www.v2os.cx/ . I need some help burning it onto CD.

Have you downloaded the files? what type of files are they?
If they are ISO. images then all you need to do is burn a cd as a ISO image using your cd burning software.
If you need software to do this then try this freeware application http://www.snapfiles.com/get/cdburnerxp.html

No, I can't find a .iso image. It says something about compiling the source code, but I don't have a clue what they mean...

All software which is open source has to release the source code to everyone. this allows you to customize it to your needs, which is for programmers not mr joe bloggs who just wants to try out linux.
try Suse , download the iso image, burn it to cd as a iso image then you can try out linux.

Most reliable Linux's you will now have to pay for. For example Red-Hat Linux is possibly one of the best for those with a more powerful machine. Linux is bundled with a boot manager so you should not need to purchase separate software.
AMD 64 3700+ (3.06ghz) - 2048 MB DDR2 RAM - 300GB Serial ATA Hard-disk 256MB XFX ultra graphics card (1100Mhz) Creative 7.1 sound card and speakers+ Subwoofer WinXp Pro (SP2) - Pipex Xtreme AVG Anti-Virus , Sygate Firewall , Spyware Blaster , Spybot S&D , Ad-ware SE , Nero 6.0

Not true, the linux systems you can download for free off linux ftp serves are just as reliable as the ones you need to pay for.

But your forgetting that you also have support included for Linux, sometimes forums can't solve all the problems with Linux as i found out :(
The problem with Linux is it is not widely enough advertised to average computer users. The Linux OS is a very good one but sometimes it comes up with strange faults that have no justifiable cause. It needs more endorsement from third-party software creators and advertising to grow. I found when i started off it was a bit weird compared to windows but gradually as all the bugs were slowly fixed i found it more and more pleasurable to use, especially the built in compilers and multiple desktops :)
Power House PC, annoying Rio Karma that i'm still waiting to be returned and a Linux server which keeps deciding not to work! The joys of IT!
