[HELP] CD Images
      #11951 - Wed Sep 24 2003 09:48 PM

Hello, I have a couple of questions and are hoping I can get some expert help.

My friend has just come of holiday from Germany from seeing' her good friend and she brought home with her a couple of picture Cd's that he had created for her. These images are all stored onto a CD-R disk and she would like to view them. She wanted to view them on her DVD player, but after trying it out, the CD wouldn't play; then I realised her DVD player didn't support CD-R disks, so I advised her to buy a new DVD player that does.

To be able to view pictures on the DVD player, do the images have to be in a certain format? (i.e. GIF; JPEG etc.)

She would also like to view them on her PC. Now she gave me this program that she wanted me to install and I assume it was a program for her to view the images in some sort of slide show presentation. The software turned out to be German and came up with an error message that I couldn't understand and therefore it didn't install

I then told her I would look around, or ask around for something English and maybe a bit more simple for her (as she isn't a heavy computer user)

I'm asking' here now if anybody knows of a program that is very simple to use, that will allow her to insert the picture CD into her PC and open the program and the images will load up into some sort of way and allow her to view them in say a slide show and possibly with other features, like add music to the background and so forth.

One last thing... is it possible to view picture Cd's with a normal CD-ROM drive? will the CD still work? or would she need CD-R drive?

Thanks you for your help. I hope you can help me out with my query.

Irfanview (768kb freeware) should do the trick and you can associate up to 96 different file types, so virtually all image file types are supported
A tutorial on how use it can be found here

As for viewing them on a regular (non-PC) DVD player, the image format supported is JPG. I believe GIF isn't available because of the issue over licensing the technology, same reason many non-commercial freeware graphic tools can't convert into GIF format. Tip: if you're in line for a new DVD player, check out Argos - they have a Philips for 89.99 which handles almost every format.

Or Asda, they have a Pacific DVD Player at about £50 and I'm told it will play anything!

...or Aldi (yes Aldi) and you can get an all-singing all-dancing Home Entertainment System with DVD player compatible with DVD/CD-R/CD-RW/MP3 and CD Audio for £90! Where were they when I shelled out 600 notes for my Sony!!

Hi Chris,

I'm assuming that these CD's contain purely images (either in folders or otherwise). If so, I think I'm right in saying, they would not be viewable on a domestic DVD player as they are.

Obviously, these CD's are viewable on a PC using anything from Irfanview (as suggested by Iain) to ACDSee, Thumbs, Adobe Photoshop Album, etc., etc.

To view images on a domestic DVD playewr they would have to be prepared as a slideshow specifically for the purpose of viewing via a DVD player, the file created would be MPEG and this, by its very nature, is viewable.

There are several packages around to facilitate this, you could check out this thread for some suggestions.

Good luck!

For viewing on a PC, what's wrong with Image Preview (supplied as part of Windows)?

I'd drag and drop everything onto the HD first, but it's not essential. You can customise the folder to include Image Preview and then see the images as a slideshow. Nothing to install.

I'm running Win ME if that affects anything.

I've reccomended a DVD player for her that supports everything, so thats not a problem. Thanks for your input TFC, it really helps, but her friend who's done it for her is very knowledgable at this, so it should be all correct as he knows what he's doing. Thanks again.

Hi Chris,

Out of curiosity, I'd be innerested in your reccomended domestic DVD player that can acccess PC created folders and files (of images, naturally) on a bog standard CD. It sounds just what I'm looking for for my mother to view the numerous CD's I have with all my images on. I was gonna get her a basic DVD player and create slideshow CD's for her to view, but this sounds a whole lot less time consuming.

What's the brand & model? Does it display the directory structure (much like on the PC monitor), and can you navigate through these directories/folders to view specific image files?
