Best ISP?
      #1188 - Tue Jun 17 2003 06:36 PM

O.K. I've read all the posts and need to know for a friend of mine which is the best isp for unmetered access for evenings and weekends. I have broadband myself but my friend is a single mum and price is the first consideration, the cheaper the better, but obviously service is important too.

I'll set the ball rolling, Clara.net, my son uses the evenings and weekends account and has always been happy with the service.

Check it out :

Nothing is as simple as we hope it will be.

I read through the complete list on www.ispreview.co.uk and thought that charity days was worth considering. They give you 20 hrs a week free. OK, so it looks s***, but if you look at it as 3 hre per day, it's not bad, plus, should you not use your 3 hrs each day, its accumalative, so in effect, should you be away several days, you could sit there all day. The price is something like £6.99 or £7.99

How about this. Fast4.net £6.99 per month, unlimited access, no notice required to terminate, pay with debit card rather than credit card as it's easier to cancel should it not be to your satisfaction.

Just to add one more. V21 light package gives up to 42 hours per week for £9.99 per month. Rarely a problem connecting with a three hour cut off time but nearly always get back on straight away. Use it anytime of the day or night. Regards, Steve.

Thats interesting. My first ISP was tesco net, 1p per min, but was forever watching the clock. Then I joined V21, cool price but took an eternity to connect, 10 + attemps the norm !. Then moved to Freeserve Anytime, they will give you a new dial up number if you have problems, slowly increasing charges. I am now tempted, as a result of previous postings, to move to an ISP slightly cheaper, ie Fast4Net at £6.99

I've been with Tesco.net since last November on the unlimited access.
I've found them very useful when I have emailed them with a problem & they're a couple of quid cheaper than aol.

By the way, not being technically minded or computer literate, I have a question. Given that I started with tesconet, and moved on, I still have the Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by TescoNet across the top of the screen, I wonder why ? then, wheni get the dial-up box, if I delve deeper into it, my next isp is still there, that was V21, so, given that I am currently with Freeserve Anytime, and feel the urge to move to Fast4Net to have a much cheaper monthly rental, will I be introducing problems, and will this confuse the computer (as much as me).

I Recommend going to join Freeserve anytime. They have good connection Speeds and no bad cut-offs or not being able to connect. They do the service for £9.99 for the first 3 months then £14.99 after that. You can get access to your e-mail from the Web, have as many E-Mail addresses as you want and room to build your own Website.
So i recommend Freeserve.

Hi

Absolutely nothing to do with ISP's but I couldn't get your icon to show in the forum. I've looked at the address of your GIF and it seems to have 2 http's in front of it as below.

Hi

When you installed TescoNet it customised your IE front page to indicate that your ISP was TescoNet. Virtually all the large ISP's do that when you install from their CD's. There is software available to remove that customisation and bring IE back to it's pristine state. (Somebody out there will probably have an address for you.) Normally when you move to a new ISP you don't need to do a full install so the IE front page stays the same. As you change your ISP you will normally create a new dialup connection and this will put you in touch with their server. The fact that IE says it belongs to TescoNet doesn't matter because your new ISP is in fact providing the service.

Just a quick note .... Fast4.net and V21.co.uk are the same company and the current port ratio is 15 users to every port! However with the more customers they get ... the more ports they can purchase!!

Fast4.net are great for the price.
The only problem is it can be hard to connect at the weekend.
2 of my family have it and they are well happy.

A warning for anyone thinking of signing up to Freeserve (and others presumably).

Go straight to Freeserve with your credit card details. DON'T fall for the BT "together" con as I once did, paying via the 'phone bill, or you'll be paying double.

Go to Freeserve (or any other ISP), but DON'T tell BT. They'll know anyway, but if they sign you up for their "together" deal, you'll be paying BT in addition to the ISP's charge.

It was a couple of years ago, so perhaps things have changed since then, but I ended up paying similar amounts to Freeserve AND to BT, whereas (I believe) people with credit cards (I didn't have one at the time) only had to pay Freeserve, with nothing extra going to BT.

Freeserve has changed. BT's pricing has changed. Perhaps this no longer applies, but be on your guard, just in case.

There is intelligent life on Earth, but I'm only visiting.

It's unfortunate, but it doesn't matter what service is offered there's always a clause declaring the company's right to change the service at any time without warning or even notification.

That's ultimately what drove me away from BT. Having been a customer for many a year I signed up for one of their early Anytime products the minute it was announced. This would give me unlimited access between 6pm and 8am weekdays and the entire weekend, great!

Then, after some considerable time and without warning or notification, they started with the restrictions, reducing the online time and applying weekly quotas - which I beleive was revealed on BBC's Watchdog program as a ploy to get users to switch to the emerging broadband technology, quaintly referred to as operation Boa.

Basically, it would appear they either got their sums wrong regarding internet traffic, were keen to get the new broadband service off the ground or, more likely, got even greedier - it may be good for the shareholders, but IMHO some of their past profit margins have been obscene).

So, time for me to jump ship, and as I already had TeleWest TV it made sense to use them and go Broadband while I was at it - no complaints, yet. (But I'm not gonna hold my breath.)
