If you know the IPs of someone trying to hack your computer is there anything you can do stop them. Its not my PC but a friends.

Inform their ISP and enclose your proof. You could also inform your ISP.

laura can I ask you why your mate thinks someone is trying to hack their pc because more then often people are just paranoid about being hacked when there is no need to be.

I had my Norton pop up and tell me that IP was trying to access my computer. i have the ip if thats any use.

Just ignore it, norton has blocked access so it is doing its job, every pc is targeted by hackers/crackers so as long as she always has norton firewall installed then there is nothing to worry about.
Tell your mate to visit shields up , Click here and then click proceed and run the ' All service Ports ' scan and if her pc passes then she is safe.

For some odd reason the test will show port 1025 as not being stealthed.
Nortons will give you the alert that the port has been accessed but blocked.
If you do the test again you will see that all your ports are then stealthed.

That site simply links to Symantec's site. Your mate can probably do the same by clicking on "give me more information" when NIS gives an alert. Once it's found what ISP the IP address belongs to, then you'll be able to click on "details" to find out the contact details of the ISP.
When I somebody tries to hack into my PC, I contact the ISP concerned, and inform it of the date and time that somebody connected to a particular ISP tried to hack into my PC.
It's probably a bit of a waste of time, but if everybody did it, the 'net might be a safer place.

I do that too, Rob. The Visual Tracking feature in NIS is very handy. I actually had a reply once when I reported an attempted intrusion.

Mine was from BT as it was one of their addresses that the intrusion attempt came from. I had told them what time it happened, but they needed to know what time zone e.g. GMT, so I told them and never heard anything after that! I suppose they did something about it, but I don't really know.

I've never been hacked by anybody in this country before. Nice to see BTOpenworld doing something right for a change.
I always make sure that I tell the ISP the date and time (GMT) that I was attacked and what the IP address was.

I've no idea whether ISPs do anything with these e-mails, but if people didn't report it then nothing could be done.
What does visual route do? Doesn't it just give the ISP's details when an IP address is entered?
