What do i do?
      #11597 - Mon Sep 22 2003 01:43 PM

Hi i have put together a basic site using front page. Though this still needs alot of work done on it, i am happy that it is ready to put on the web, while i carry on working on it. I have my domain name registered and have decided on a web hosting package. What i want to know is when i sign up for the hosting package, what is the next step?

Do i just click on a button to upload, that takes all the files etc needed, or do i have to upload files one by one?

Also will i need to rename the pages or will it do it for me?

Lastly once it is uploaded and running, how easy is it to update the site while it is live?

Thanks in advanced for your help

This depends on your hosting package. However, most will require you to transfer your site to your web space yourself, using FTP software. A good option is WS_FTP LE, available from www.ftpplanet.com. Presuming you're an amateur working from home this is a free download. You will need to get the address of your web space and the login details from your supplier, which you'll get when you register with them. From there you just transfer the files from your hard disk to the web space and, with a bit of luck, you should be up and running.

Let us know how you get on. And if you get stuck, there are always plenty of people around these parts to help you out.

Web hosts usually prefer you to use FTP, which is simple to do. That said, if you used a host like mine which also provides its clients with a Plesk site management page, then you could login to that and upload via your browser, so check out if this is offered? That would be the "magic button" you mentioned.

Did you tell your web host you are using FrontPage? They must be told, as they will want to load the domain onto a NT server, not an Apache server, so they can support FP extensions. Once they do that, you can use the upload tool in FrontPage to get the pages on the web. Might be a good time to review the app's Help files on this topic?

A final tip: Apache servers are always case senstiive, so when you write the links they must reflect the page names exactly, including any use of capitalisation for files and folders. Failure to do this will result in a page not found error. I'm not aware if NT servers are as picky, but it would be a good habit to get into anyway.
