I have been burning CDs successfully using Nero copy on the fly but recently I tried to burn a few but it wouldn't work. Initially said it couldn't read the cd to put in a CDR but eventually I tried with several different CDS, thinking the new ones might be copyprotected, managed to burn up to song no 4 successfully on all but then it stopped, says burn unsuccessful. I haven't downloaded any new software on my PC so I don't understand why it's stopped working. I only have 128k of memory and 40 gb of hard disk, could it be lack of memory in general or is the CD writer on its last legs. It came with the Tiny PC, 1000 AMD Duron I bought in November 2000. Do CD writers have a long life span or not? I am using version 4 of Nero which came with my PC and updated it online for free to version 5 I think.

It could just be that that the laser head is in need of cleaning. Have you got a CD cleaner? They are definitely worth owning. I paid £8 for mine and it includes a cleaning disk (little brushes on it), cleaning fluid, a cleaning clothe and an anti static disk wipe.
I had the same trouble as you at one time and just giving it a good clean made the world of difference.

Is the CD device playing regular CD's? I had to replace my writer trhis week as the laser was dying. It happens, they are very sensitive. BTW prices for writers have dropped quite a bit, so now is a good time to replace it. Can get a decent Asus 52 speed for about £35.
Caveat - watch the bundled software! I had Nero full burner with the last one, but this new one only gave Nero Express, so I had to get Pinnacle separately. Also, if your Nero was supplied as OEM and not the Retail version, don't expect it to work with a new writer unless the model is the same as the old one. Nero will detect the change of model, warn you then refuse to run.

Hi Anna K
You don’t mention “burn-proof” does you writer have this? Be sure it is enabled
What speed are you using? Try 1:1 or 2X
You could try going back to you pre-update software (off the CD?) there may be a glitch in the update.
If you rip to the hard disk is there still a problem?
You mention copy protection; there are quite a few ways cp works you do know cp may be built into your burner software!!? Like macrovision on video. This is my guess you’re hitting “artefacts”
DMA needs to be enabled has this been changed?
You scandisk and de-frag every week don’t you?
Let us know how you go on there lot’s of things to try.

Explain why DMA needs to be enabled? What is its purpose? Neither my old rewriter nor this new one had it enabled, yet I have never had any trouble with burning.

Hi scribble
You could try uninstalling you software then reinstalling you may have dropped a link or file. In control panel/system/hardware/device manager/CDROM are you burners present and correct?
They are IDE burners?
Further down the list should be IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers open it you will seethe channels click on the one you CD’s are on, click advanced settings choose “DMA if available” as far as I am aware all IDE burners should be using DMA where available.

Direct Memory Access (DMA) is still being recommended because some decoders need it. The normal setting is 'DMA if available' and the system will work out for itself whether to use it.
