If I play a CD on my CD Rom..the sound is fine...listening to Kings College choir as I write....but then when I rip tracks using dBpoweramp, to wav. rather than MP3, the sound is just not clear..sounds like an old scratchy record rather than a perfect CD.........
I am getting fed up with this. the soundcard came loaded on my 3.5 year old Dell Dimension. The sound card is a Montego 11 soundblaster..that is what Belarc tells me.
I am not proficient with techie matters, but I am thinking of throwing my PC away, I am so frustrated!
Can some kind person tell me what to do???

Why not rip them to MP3? You can download a free Player/Ripper called Quintessential and it does the entire job.
If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all.

Joe,
I was told it was best to rip CD tracks to wav. and then use dBpowerAMP to create MP3 files later..
However, whatever I do I seem to get popping problems. I have just tried ripping with Zonealarm switched off and it seems a bit better. Should I also switch off my AV programme as well whilst ripping?
I make sure I am not working on my PC while ripping, just in case I disturb the process.
Any other hints for happy ripping???
I did try EAC audio..but found it much more difficult to understand and the results seemed no better than with dBpowerAMP..you can see I do try!!

I use Roxio for ripping. But a couple of other utilities I use may be of innerest;
MPEG Suite for encoding WAV>MP3, MP3>MP3, MP3>WAV at various bitrates, etc.
Also TagScanner for bulk MP3 Tag & filename editing.
TFC Nothing is a problem for me...

I'm never quite sure about bitrates when converting, TFC. I use Wisecroft Ripper to convert (mainly) Real Audio files to MP3, but is there any advantage in choosing a higher bitrate than that used for the original?
I'm not having problems, and I'm aware of such things as the audio range of the human ear, using the highest possible (within reason) carrier frequencies and all that sort of thing. I'm just a bit confused when it comes to audio conversion.

The last issue of Webuser has an article about Musicmatch Jukebox and how to use it. I downloaded this programme and in my humble opinion it is the mutts proverbials.

Couldn't agree more. Have you got the basic or the MX? I've got MX but am thinking of upgrading to MX Platinum so that I can have Artist on Demand. I'm now trying various radio recorders so that I can record streams and looking for some good wireless speakers so I can listen downstairs and even in garden.

Just got the basic, but it beats everything else i've tried by a country mile and the files are tiny. I copy my cd's to play on my personal and they sound spot on, It's fast at ripping also.

I use Nero for ripping, and it has an encoder function with it and the results seem good. You would need to buy the full mp3PRO encoder separately from their site, as the included one has a 30 day trial limit.

Well, I have just retruned to this thread..the question is, if I download Musicmatch ..will the sound of my ripped CDs be any better than from the other programmes I have used..in other words, how much influence does the soundcard have on the reproduced sound.
