Hi All,
I know this hasn’t got anything to do with this forum really, but to me it has something to do with ADSL lines and you might find this interesting.
My Aunt is over from Canada at the moment and she pays her bills by telephone banking over there. While she is over here the problem is when she is at my parents house trying to phone her bank, there is a message that comes on saying “Due to a technical problem, you can’t proceed”. However, if she comes along to my place and phones, she has no problems. We have figured out that my phone line has been upgraded to ADSL Broadband and my parents don’t have the Internet in their house, so the phone lines are the problem.
So on that bases, please could someone enlighten us on why some services like this will only work on this type of line? And if that is the case, then shouldn’t our telephone companies upgrade all our lines?
Thanks

Do your parents have an older type phone that has been set to use pulse dialling rather than tone dialling? I assume t/p banking requires the user to key in certain numbers and pulse dialling will not send a signal to the bank's computers. You can tell the difference by listening to the numbers being dialled. Pulse dialling will produce a series of clicks depending on the number dialled. Tone dialling is exactly that, a tone for each number.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really? Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

Hi Greysts,
Thanks for your reply, my parents have a tone line and one of these digital phones as well. I understand where you are coming from, but not in this instance. Anymore ideas would be interested.
Thanks

Do they have a shared line? Sharing is removed before installing ADSL but it's lot more common than people think. Perhaps the bank have some sophisticated checking procedure.

Hi Greysts,
I don´t think their phone line is shared, as it is just normal BT box in the house and it isn´t in a sheltered accommodation if that was what you are thinking. Other than that, I haven´t heard of shared lines.
Thanks

Not many people have. It is used by BT when they need to install a line but haven't got any spare room on the DP (distribution point). With a bit of jiggery-pokery they get two installations for the price of one. Both parties can use there t/p at the same time and with voice calls there is no discernible difference. It's a different matter when one or both lines are being used for dial-up connections. Then you get a dramatic fall in speed because the modems at both ends have to compensate for the poor line quality. You can find out by simply ringing BT and asking them. At the same time you can ask for the line gain to be increased. I'm not saying that this is the casue of your problems but it's worth checking.

What greystokes is refering to is something called a dacs, this is a device that sits on the end of a pair of wires at the customer end and has 2 lines come out of it, although there are many about and people will not know they are on them and they will slow you connection to 28kb they will make no differance to where you can dial, It may be an idea to see if the line has international call barring, other than a fault on the line which would cause problems on voice calls all lines should be the same, upgrading to broadband will make no differance, it is just a case of another jumper (wire) being conected over the top of the existing line. Hope this helps, i know a little bit about this as my job is working as a BT engineer and the majority of the work now days is getting rid of dacs to upgrade lines to adsl. Regards Ian
