Hi
Can someone help me.
I have Windows 98.
I access the internet by double clikcing on a disk installed ISP (FreeUk icon on my desktop) as it was. It is a few years old but I used them to connect to the internet - ie I click on it and it dials up for me.
My problem now is that although it still dials up and says it has connected me, when I then try and open Internet Explorer and surf, I will type an address in and nothing will happen. It just hangs and I cannot access anything on the net.
Could this be becos although I can dial up using the FreeUK ISP, in reality they may no longer exist so my computer/modem is talking to nobody hence reason I can no longer access the web anymore.
I am puzzled as this just happened one day. It has worked ok for years now, then suddenly the trail has gone cold.
Any tips or explanations to solve will be welcomed
Cheers lads and ladettes..

Have you checked that the modem is actually dialling the correct number. You may be the victim of a 'Dialler' that is connecting through a premium rate t/p number.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really? Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

The Website http://www.freeuk.com/index.php is still there.
The number your modem dials should be 0845 126 4001 or 0845 079 0007 .
" Help is always at hand with FreeUK. Call technical support on 08453 55 55 55* (*all calls charged at local call rates) or e-mail us at support@freeuk.net ........... Our support lines are open from 9am to 9pm Monday to Saturday ".
They also have some very informative support pages here and here and a lot more.
Here is an example of their info .......
Cannot find any sites with browser --------------------------------- Has the "connect to" box appeared? Have you heard the modem connecting? Check for IP address set in either TCP/IP or DUN properties. Check to ensure that the DNS settings are correct in TCP/IP properties. See our page for setting up Dial Up Networking for information on how to get to these settings.

You can obviously connect to the internet, as you have posted to this site. So, there is no problem with your system.
Some PAYG ISPs require you to connect every so-many-days to maintain your account. When was the last time that you used it?
