Tesco Broadband
      #111080 - Sat Sep 25 2004 12:32 PM

I was just flicking through WebUser and stopped Tesco Broadband. I noticed it was only £19.97 a month, and with uncapped access. Is it any good?
My Opinion On Free Webhosting: No such thing, there's HAS to be a catch!

I have just signed up to it, it works fine the free phone number you ring for advise and back up has proven very busy so be prepared to wait. They have just gone live with their service so I suppose that would be the reason why.

They advised me by e-mail, the date that the system went live. The day before, the free modem arrived, a speedtouch 330. The drivers are made for Tesco, just plumb in the Modem after running the CD and away I went.

No problems 50mb personnel web space and some 15 e-mail addresses.

Look at me, sounds like an advert...

Regards
Marcus

Jaynee somebody on BT signed up their brother with Tesco and then it stopped working after a day - none of the Tesco hint and tipper types (thats technical support) knew anything about Broadband 'we have not been trained in that'

From a bt newsgroup and secondhand info.

I think that this tells us a lot about the quality of help available, not just on Tesco, but with most ISPs. If anyone's stuck for help, don't waste time and money on a helpline, post an thread here!

Tesco broadband uses an unusual DSL technology to other DSL broadband suppliers called datastream.

It appears that datastream shares its resources on a particular exchange.
Like an old shared telephone line.
If you are the only logged on user on datastream on your exchange, you have full throughput.
The next datastream connection halves your throughput, and so on.

Just thought I'd pitch in about Tesco. I've been on bb with them since it started. No complaints:fast connection most of the time (approx.80%) and no down time.
However, three emails I set, really out of curiosity about various thinng to do with bb and their service, remained UNANSWERED. This was even after being automatically acknowledged.
I was suprised to read bad reports about their bb service from various forums after I opted for them. Maybe I've just been lucky. If I had my time to do over again I'd go with a company like pipex which has a wealth of experience - just incase the customer needs it. On the whole, I would not recommend tesco just because they did not answer my emails (petty and bitter eh? ;))
