BT Voyager Modem
      #109130 - Sun Sep 19 2004 11:07 PM

Hi All,
Not sure if this is a broadband, hardware or software problem so i'm posting in two or three areas. Apologies if you think there's an echo on WU's forums...........

I've just upgraded to broadband via AOL, using the BT Voyager Modem supplied. I followed the instructions and everything went without a hitch. What I'm stuck with now though is, in my taskbar I've got the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon permanently there.
I appreciate it is a piece of new hardware connected by USB and would warrant the icon there in certain circumstances, i.e. Digital Camera, but to me it's just another piece of equipment like a printer, which doesn't show the icon.
Any suggestions for getting rid of it?
All help gratefully received - Thanks

Hi Andy
If you are using XP then right click on the bottom border and select "Task Manager" from the Menu click on the Applications tab(on left)
all you should see if online is the AOL 9.0 program running
Anything else click on it(to highlight it) and hit the "End Task" button this will get you out of the "loop"
In case you are wondering? The AP in my name is Answerpool.com (see my profile)

cant find anyway of getting rid of the icon as i have the same problem, but you can hide it, by going to control panel select taskbar & start menu and tick the hide inactive icons click apply this will hide the safely remove hardware icon. i've tried BedstorfromAP suggestion but that doesn't do anything as i only have one task running and thats my internet explorer.

this is my second reply as my first was rubbish try this i found it in another forum (sorry guys for going else where)

Safely Remove Hardware Icon?
If you have an USB device attached to your system, you will notice an icon in the Notification area, which - when clicked - will give you the option to Stop your hardware, before you unplug it.

It is possible that you never unplug this hardware. So how do you get rid of the icon? As far as I know the only way is to right-click the notification area, and selecting Properties. Under the Notification area heading, click Customize. Find the Safely Remove Hardware icon and select Always hide in the Behavior column next to it (press OK and Apply to back out).

the notification area he is talking about is the area on the right of the taskbar where the icons are, but if you go to control panel and select taskbar & start menu you will end up in the same window where the notification area and customise button is.

This i have tried and does work

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions, I've tried both and JohnT's second one seems to be about the best option.
BTW Bedstor, I've had a look at your Answerpool site -top!, I'm thinking of recommending it to WU - or has that already been done?

Andy re your last comment....Have been on here for a while. Word of mouth is a good recommendation (thanks) There are several people from here posting there and Vice versa
Just for those who don't read profiles:
The Answerpool site was formed after the closure of the Answerpoint Site which was On the Jeeves (US) site (http://www.ask.com) over 2years ago so the Pedigree is good Ps It has laster longer than that site
