Help! Windows Update
      #107580 - Tue Sep 14 2004 10:17 PM

Can anyone tell me how to turn off windows automatic update?

How do I get it out of my system tray?

For some reason it has just appeared. It doesn't do anything when I'm online and I don't remember doing anything to have it permanently displayed in the tray.

Every time I see it I think that it is downloading.

Have you got Windows XP? If so, it might be wanting you to install SP2, click on it and see what it says. I had the icon in my Systray for ages until I installed SP2 from a CD. The icon's gone now. If you've got SP2, it may be that you've got it set to download and install updates automatically. Mine's set to notify me before downloading and installing as this is a lot more convenient on dial-up. You can turn off the automatic updates feature in the Security Center on SP2. If you haven't got SP2, try going to Control Panel>System and click on the Automatic Updates tab and change the settings there.

Thanks Madeline.

I am waiting to recieve the SP2 disc, as I am on dial up. I will change the settings through the control panel.

When I went to windows update page, it asked me to turn on windows auto update for when SP2 was ready to download. But, as you know it takes some time to download on dial up so I requested the CD which I am still waiting for.

Good Luck with installing SP2 when you get the CD. I still haven't got the one I ordered from Microsoft, but another mag I subscribe to had a CD with their latest issue, so I went ahead and used it . I didn't have any problems installing SP2. Don't forget to turn off your security such as AV and your firewall when you do the installation, otherwise they can interfere with it. They should come back on when you restart your PC. By the way, it takes a lot longer to restart than usual, so don't worry if it seems to be taking ages, it gets there in the end!

Thanks for your help. I thought you might be interested in this article in my local paper.

I have posted it on a few of the webuser forums.

Found this in my local evening news paper, 15/09/04. Thought it might be of use to the forums.

OPEN WINDOWS

Microsoft has warned it has found a new security flaw with its Windows XP operating system.

An attacker could infiltrate other computers by persuading their owners to open a specialised graphic file.

The company released a patch to fix the flaw as well as a tool that allows users to scan their systems.

Hope this was helpful.

Turlac.

I picked this up on the BBC News site as well, though a bit more in-depth, and perhaps less misleading as a result. I believe there's more information available from the M$ site.

from the M$ update site.

Important Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is not affected by this issue. Windows XP SP2 users only need to update Office (if installed).

I've got SP2, but I had to install it because we've got Word 2002 on this PC.
