Hi All,
I'm a new user of MSN Messenger since 2 weeks ago. I use it now to speak to my family in Canada and we both have web cams.
The problem is when we get connected each time, I invite them to view my web cam but as soon as they accept, my modem just goes dead. (I'm on broadband) Then a few seconds later the modem comes back on and I have to reconnect to everything again. After a couple of goes it does start to work. Last night my family decided to reboot their computer and came back on line, then the web cams worked OK.
Does anyone knows if it's MSN Messenger, Web Cam or a Modem problem?
I'd be grateful if someone could help me.
Thanks

Hi Clum111
I think the problem you may have is that you are both using different operating systems. You must both have the same OS to use MSN Messenger to view the web cam even though you will probably be getting some sound coming through even if it is erratic. You will notice the difference once you both have the same OS. Hope this helps.

Thats the first time I've ever heard that you must have the same OS. I communicate with lots of people using Messenger, web cam and mic and we all have different a OS. We have never had a problem.
I'm thinking that your machine might be getting pushed to it's limit. Try closing down all unnecessary programs before holding your conversation. Also go into Device Manger and find your modem. Highlight it and select Properties. Go to the power Management tab and make sure there isn't a tick in the Allow computer to turn this device off to save power.

I know it may seem a strange solution but we had this problem a couple of months ago. I was running XP SP1 but my friends in OZ and NZ were both running ME and we all had the same web cam (Logitech 3000) connected to our PC's. We updated the OS's, and got the same version of Messenger installed and got the latest drivers for the webcams but we still had the same problem. After a bit of head scratching and a bit of thought and to no avail the friend in OZ borrowed a laptop running XP and tried this, and guess what we never had any problems. So our friend in NZ upgraded his OS and since then we have not had any probs. Clum111 maybe you have a different version of Messenger installed from your family member or if you have installed SP2 this may be contributing to the problem. Hope any of this is of a help to you.

It's most probable it was coincidence and your friends had problems with their computers. You said that after they used another computer or upgraded their OS the problem went away.
Using a different OS wouldn't make a difference as the computers still talk to each other in 'common language' for want of a better phrase.
