Novice needs host web provider
      #10591 - Mon Sep 15 2003 04:06 PM

Hey all,

I am in need of some advice regarding who I should use to host a webpage I need to create.

Please note, I am complete novice in the construction of websites!

Below is a general list of requirements.

Any suggestions for sites will be gratefully received. (along with any other help)

Thanks,
spirit__dancer

REQUIREMENTS
A simple site, no need for anything fancy.
Used primarily to share photographs. But may be used for other information (basic text).
Preferably that would enable all users to post photographs (tho this is not essential)
Minimal security - allowing access only by those with passwords
Willing to consider a system where each person has their own section to which they have write access (rest of site read only)
Preferably based on templates...I dont really have the time to learn and write the html :o( ...something to consider for the future, if the site takes off.
Free! Can't justify any costs at this stage.
No pop up adds (they bug me) but will tolerate banner ads

I doubt you will get a single host for free offering those features. The cost is in the bandwidth, and images use plenty. Also for limited shared site admin access you will have to forget the big free trash like Geocities and Angelfire. That kind of stuff comes at a price, as it uses web based desktops and scripting to allow the security controls. Determine a budget and try again?

www.portland.co.uk gives free web hosting of about 20MB

but as for your requirements you may be able to get some free CGI scripts from another location. The web site will explain how to use the code and is normally a cut and past thing.

sometimes I wounder why I have a computer!
