Usually downloading Excel files present no problems but in trying to download a csv file in Windows 2000 I get an error message : "runtime error 438". After inviting the download I do not get the usual download page (open Save Cancel etc ). The system says"transferring" and then displays a part of the Excel file and freezes. Help please.

try right clicking the file you want to download and click "save target as" and this should bring up the save box

Thank you for your reply. The problem is that you can not right click anything The only option is "download in csv format" . This works fine on 2 other computers but not on the one where I really need the info. The details are as explained in first message. Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

Not quite a solution, but until the experts come back, could you try copying the file from one of the other machines, using either a floppy or a CD-RW? At least it would end up where you want it.
Hope that helps while you're waiting for a real solution.

It's a long time since I used it but I think you have to have Excel open to receive a CSV (comma separated values) file.
Give it a try, you have nothing to lose.

The problem appears to be that Excel is trying to open your csv file on line rather than allowing you to save it to your HD and then open it. That worries me a bit because that is the sort of action that could be initiated by a malformed macro. I would suggest that you change the way in which csv files are handled. If you go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options and click on File Types you can either change the programme that opens csv files or change the way in which they are handled. You can, for example, change the option to Save rather than Open. I would probably just tell it that you wish to use Notepad to open csv files and see what happens.

Many thanks. Yes we have tried fixing via "File Types etc" but without success. It is not a file we are trying to download but information via a paid service. The invitation says "Download data in CSV format" and then the trouble starts. The "rogue" computer immediately says "transferring" and then freezes as stated above. I have tried this procedure on two other computers (using the password) and it works perfectly. The data is perfectly set out in an Excel file. I am grateful for your trouble.

Intriguing. I suppose the logical conclusion to draw is that the version of Excel on this PC is in some way different from that on the other 2. Any chance of reloading Excel and trying again? I remember from the old days at work that Excel used to have some interesting 'features' and we quite often had to re-install.

Another thought springs to mind. Have you had a look at the logfile in Event Viewer? Try the download again and after the failure check the log file. It might give a clue as to what has happened.

Things are getting desparate now. The only thing I can come up with now is to download the lastest version of MDAC from the Microsoft site here plus the Jet engine from here. These two items are normally only used in Microsoft Access and SQL but they do have an effect on Excel as well.

greysts Thx once again. I am going to try again with uninstalling all the Office files and reinstalling cleanly (the entire suite). I still having a sneaking suspicion something is not quite right here (just a hunch) I'll keep you posted. If that fails I'll go down the MDAC road. Grateful to you

Success at last. Excel now "accepts" the downloading of the relevant csv formatted information. Thank you so much for your invaluable assistance.

Glad you got it sorted. Very much a hammer/nut situation unfortunately but you got there in the end.
