Up until about Febuary, my PC's dial up connection speed was 56kbps. But, after that, it dropped to 36kbps. First, I did'nt think it was a problem. But when it comes to playing my son's online games, it does.
In the General PC forum I posted the post about Runescape. Thanks to you lot, it worked again. (Horagh!) That was until he actually played the game. Because of the 36kbps connection, it keeps loosing the connection and quiting to the title screen.
I have ensured my modem is 56kbps and it is, and my ISP, One.Tel offers a 56kbps service, which I have.
Please help, as if it's just games, it could effect other, more important things...

He will have to live with the problem I am afraid. That game is a real pain to play on dialup. BTW just because your ISP offers a 56kbps doesn't mean you will get it. 36kbps sounds about normal to me, but I was with freeserve.
I love puta as much as I love this forum

I was told by BT that you can only expect to get speeds of 30 -45kbps on dial-up with a 56k modem. I usually get around 40kbps. Madeline.

But my PC and my son's used to offer excactly 56k. It's when I installed ZoneAlarm on it when it stopped offering 56k.

Depends on how far from the exchange you are and the condition of the telephone lines.
When I was on dial up my normal connection was 48kbps and sometimes I could get 51kbps. I live close to my exchange, but when I lived further away the best I could get was 42kbps. A friend who lives even further away can only get 33kbps.
Sometimes after connecting and checking the connection speed it can be worth disconnecting and trying again because quite often you will get a better connection.

You definitely would never get the full 56k and would be lucky to even if you plugged in at the exchange. You will probably find that you were reading incorrect information. Depending on settings the optimum speed could be displayed instead of the actual speed.
See if this info can help.

I just tried connecting to the internet without ZoneAlarm running. I got a speed of 43k. That's 6k more than without ZoneAlarm.

Hmm i had a slow dial up connection for a while it ran at 38Kbps. I tried everything but the only thing that worked was getting a decent modem. After that i got a line speed connection of 52Kbps. Try upgrading the firmware on your modem or failing that if you want a better speed you might have to get a better modem.
I'm puzzled by why ZA slowed your connection however? It shouldn't happen! It could have been you got a lucky connection when there were few people accessing the One Tel servers?

I'm quite a long way from the exchange, so I'm probably quite lucky to get 40kbps, sometimes it's more, up to 44kbps. You can ask BT to increase the gain on your line, this may improve your connection speed. Madeline.

56Kbps on dial-up is rarely achieved.
For on-line gaming I would really urge you to consider an uncapped broadband connection. Before you dismiss this suggestion. Consider how much time you spend on-line, look at the cost. ADSL broadband will also free up your telephone line for normal use.
I have seen advertisements from well known companies, such as AOL, offering unlimited uncapped access at 512Kbps for less than 20 pounds per month.
On-line gaming can be very addictive at 512Kbps, be warned, you may wish to control the use. The ISP market is shifting, do not tie yourself into a long minimum contract. I am trying to leave Wanadoo, my advice is: Do not join Wanadoo, they have a minimum contract of one year for a "dreadful"[quote] service.

Good value at the moment is the AOL Silver Broadband(256k) which is £17.99 per month 2 pounds more than Dial up. You get all the kit and its easy to set up You'll have faster loading lots of items such as those jerky web cams will become more animated (need the 512k service to get some moving naturally) and access to the AOL radio channels. And Online gaming won't be Jerk,Jerk, Jerk,! If you get in a mess there is plenty of help (freephone) and for another 5 pounds the Gold service (512k) offers twice as fast loading BTW There are no Time outs or Loading limits on AOL! If you are working to a budget then this is worth considering? http://www.aol.co.uk/products/broadband/silver
In case you are wondering? The AP in my name is Answerpool.com (see my profile)

If I had a telephone line, I think that I'd pay another two quid and go with Tesco's £19.99 512kbs (no download limits) offering. Probably terrible customer sevice at that price though.
