broadband help please
      #101899 - Wed Aug 25 2004 11:28 PM

hi me and my girlfriend are moving into a new flat next month. we are both students and both need the internet and have decided broadband is the way forward so we can both be online at the same time. we need a service provider that is as cheap as possible but does not have a 12 month contract and preferably without a wacking startup fee.

the other thing is that the two computers will be at opposite ends of the flat, there is a phone line in each room so it would be ideal if we could each have a broadband modem and just use those, but both be online at the same time. is this possible or will i have to buy a router?? (would rather not fork out for a wireless one being poor student and all).

any help would be very very greatfully appreciated. cheers, timbo

p.s. already have a voyager 100 modem

If the two phone lines have different t/p numbers you would need two separate contracts with your BB supplier, one for each line. If one t/p is an extension from the other then, no you could not plug two modems in and have both connected to BB at the same time. If you don't want wireless then the only solution is hardwiring. This could be done by connecting one computer to the BB modem and then connecting the second PC to the first using Internet Connection Sharing. You would obviously need to run an ethernet cable between the two PCs and the main PC would have to be on all the time for the second to get access to the net. It does have the saving grace of being the cheapest option. Depending on distance a piece of ethernet cable should not cost much more than a tenner.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

ok. they are both on the same phone line. would a wireless network card work? i'm a total novice when it comes to networking. will windows tell me what to do when they are connected or will i need some amount of knowledge? also will the second computer need the service provider to be installed or will it be able to access the net through IE? Cheers
