I am currently with AOL and like it ,Ok slag it off ... I have been with it since AOL 5 (AOL9 now) I started out surfing with an ISP called http://www.IGclick.co.uk (1997?) who allotted me a dial-up number and some basic instructions how to connect on a piece of Paper Result: 10 minutes online time (as and when) Modem was screaming the house down into the early hours for....over 20 pounds per month.Had to reconfigure IE every few days. Closed due to financial difficulties (I think?) Saw another Site advertised http://www.redhotant.com paid 120 pounds up front for a years service Got 1 session.. 10 minutes worth connection, then nothing read the "owner" had done a runner with over a Million pounds(service was running off 2 old servers) I never got my money back. The Police caught the Guy, forget if they Charged him with Embezzlement or Fraud? And there are a lot of us still looking for our money back. He ended up doing time. GOOD! I then signed up to AOL because it has just gone to unlimited Online access as a stopgap. I was waiting for http://www.altavista.com to launch as an ISP but that was Scrapped.I stayed with AOL ever since.(Long stopgap?) LOL! Anyone else got any similar stories?

We all make purchasing mistakes - first modem I owned was a 300 baud modem I connected to compuserve with that
'Virtual' is strange concept and open to the fraudsters. - bit like 'free services for ever' etc Best thing is learn from it. I used a lot of uk2net at one stage - they changed to become a games server getup.
AOL is alright - My mate seems happy with it. so dont be snobby if it works super.

As with everything - WORD OF MOUTH is the key.
Don't sign up with an ISP because they have fancy adverts on TV (AOL, BT)
Don't sign up with an ISP because they have special offers "for a limited time only" (Wannadoo)
Don't sign up with an ISP because their disc comes free with your modem (pretty much every big ISP)
Sign up with an ISP because you've have well informed recommendations that they offer excellent service at competitive prices - Freedom2Surf!
Not all Broadband services are the same

Dont knock ISP cd's they are good for getting the latest in ms bugware - eg Internet explorer so it saves a download.

I'm with BT, not because of TV ads because (shock, horror) I don't have a TV. I used to work for BT and they're OK. Actually, I wasn't that impressed with BT Openworld Anytime (dial-up), but since they've changed to BT Yahoo! Anytime, they've improved no end. I don't know what their BB packages are like though. I am looking around for a good broadband package because my daughter is going to uni and with her being dyslexic she will need to download a large amount of work.
You say BT is OK, but their cheapest package gives you 2 hours a day and 1GB a month. Wanadoo gives you 8hrs a day and 2GB.
What do you think?
Has anybody got any comments as to why I should not choose Wanadoo. Your advice would be very much appreciated.

Turlac -Wanadoo looks a bargain - It's big and should be reliable. Also inexpensive - Free modem and free connection ? Others charge over £100 for that!
BedstorfromAP - I remember Redhotant - Other sites used to take the mickey out of them, calling themselves ColdBlueInsect and RedHotPants ,etc. They were very funny. Fortunately RedHotAnt died the death before I parted with any cash. The best offer I ever got was from WonkyPig -- £15 one-off payment and free internet for life ! I laughed so much, I fell off my wallet, so they didn't get any loot from me either.

Good ISP. Stay with them is my advice. If you are happy with AOL, BLOWFISH, xyz, go with it. Support them.
The problem comes when you have a problem and your ISP customer services prove to be:
useless unable to use the English language rude inarticulate abusive time-wasters jobs-worths untrained unaware that a non-Microsoft world exists out there
Otherwise, move to another ISP as soon as you can. The message may eventually drop to your current ISP.

I was happy with AOL since V6 until AOLHell9 came on the scene in April last year. It drove me nuts to say the least. And I did try to live with it for well over 6 months. I am now back with user friendly V8 and at peace! It might work OK for some but for others like me it doesn't, this topic is well documented on AOL message boards. I wasn't the only dissatisfied customer, believe me. Sorry about the rant but when I see AOHell9 quoted I react!!!
