ADSL router and modem
      #100153 - Fri Aug 20 2004 08:10 AM

Are there any technoheads here who know the answer to this?
Planning to get a broadband connection at 512kb and came to know that i could either use a USB modem or a router.
Apparently the USB modem is easier to install but can be slower than the router and is more difficult to use if I wanted to connect 2/3 PCs wirelessly to the same broadband connection. Also the router doesnt use up a USB port.
Any significant differences/advantages between the two?
An recommendations i.e which ones would be good and reasonably cheap??!!
Thanks in advance

Broadband modems and routers are two entirely different things. The modem receives the signal from your ISP, converts it and sends it to your PC. A router takes the signal from the modem and transmits it to a number of different PC's. You can buy a combined modem/router which does all the work of the two separate units.

I don't know of any ADSL modems that do not use USB for a connection. I haven't researched it but you should be able to buy a combined unit that uses ethernet.

You will never get more line speed than the 512kb you pay for. Putting a router into the system will give each PC 512kb only if the others in the system are not downloading at the same time. If you have two PCs and they are both downloading files simulateously they will each get 256kb. However the slight speed drop experienced in simple surfing on both PCs will not be noticeable.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

Also - be aware of the difference between broadband routers and ADSL routers.

Broadband routers are used to share your connection between many PCs, but you need an ADSL modem to plug into your phone socket.

An ADSL router (I have the Linksys WAG54G) has an ADSL modem built in and therefore connects into your phone socket - and then you connect each PC to the router to share the connection.

I use a combined router, ADSL modem. It connects into the 10/100 LAN port on my PC's on board LAN port and at the other end connects to the phone line. It's permanently connected even when the PC is off, no logging in or anyhthing at any time and it also has a bulit in hardware firewall which works very well. My Norton firewall rarely has anything to do now. It has another three ports to connect other PC's simlutanelously to the internet or each other or a another router, wireless access point etc.

I also have a USB ADSL modem that was free with my BB connection. Used it once and put it back in its box where it remains. I paid for the modem/router/firewall as it is the best option all round. Mine is a US robotics and cost me about £50 from ebuyer. V. easy to setup and has never given me any trouble. It's probably cheaper now and there are other cheaper makes out there if you want to keep cost down.
