Menu Bar
|
My Menu Bar in Windows XP Pro has gone walkies and I can't find a way to reinstate it. Can anyone help please?

Sometimes, the Menu Bar (Internet Explorer) appears for a split second showing the Windows logo and the rest of the bar blank. With other programs, nothing! Not even a white bar.

Re Internet Explorer, are you viewing in Full Screen Mode?
Press the F11 key, or move your cursor to the top of the page, and quickly go to Tools > Un-check 'Full screen'.
Re the other 'Programs', could you name a few of them?

Sorry, but what you are suggesting is impossible. Tools is not available without the Menu Bar. The "other" programs include ANY program that has a Menu Bar like for example Mozilla Firefox, My Documents, My PC, etc. etc.

As a matter of fact, it is entirely possible. Tools becomes visible when you move the cursor to the top of the page if your are in Full screen Mode. It is showing in the 'Command Bar' also if you haven't selected it previously in the Tools > Command Bar to show the Menu Bar. Assuming your using IE7.
Firefox can react in the same way if you use the F11 key. Depending how you have customised the Browser, the Menu Bar could disappear in Full Screen Mode.
The other programs, aren't actually programs but folders except the etc. etc ones of course.
Again, Full screen Mode could affect the Menu Bar depending if it has been pulled into an un-viewable position if the Tool Bars have been 'Un-locked'.
Do you have 'Auto Hide' in operation? Have a look in say My Pictures > View > Tool Bars > Un check 'Auto Hide'.

Apologies for the trouble I am creating but I have come to the conclusion that some Registry values are corrupt. My replies above should be in blue font.

If you have some "grey" areas at the top of your IE browser, have you tried right clicking and ensuring that Menu Bar has a tick next to it (assuming you've tried the F11 method).
PS. It's easier to read posted threads in the black default colour, rather than changing the font colour...easier on the reader's eye etc

This toggles the Menu Bar on/off on most Microsoft programs. It's the key that has been around for years to allow keyboard selections when the mouse doesn't work.

I have tried the F11 method with IE6 but no joy and there are no grey areas as you suggest. What I do have is a massive headache and calling it a day. Thank you very much for your time which is much appreciated. I will post again on this one. Regards.

Yes, I do mean the Menu Bar and pressing the Alt key makes no difference. The Menu Bar is unobtainable with any program/folder. Very frustrating to say the least. At this late stage of my battle today I can only conclude that some values in the Registry are corrupt or missing. I have tried various recommended fixes to no avail.

You could try this fix:
Restoring a Missing Menu Bar
If the Windows Explorer does not show a menu bar, it may be due to an entry in the Registry that needs to be deleted.
1. Start Regedit
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\Explorer
3. If there is the following key - ITBarLayout - Delete it
>> Download this Reg file << to do this automatically.
NOTE: It is recommended you backup the Registry before you attempt any changes

Thank you Fusion but I have already tried your suggestion. There is no ITBarLayout key.

Unfortunately System Restore was disabled by the owner of the laptop before he asked me to help. That's the first thing I checked before attempting anything else.
