Service Pack 3 - any problems?

Hello everyone,
I notice that some of you had trouble downloading and installing Service Pack 3 for XP, though these issues seem to have been largely resolved.
I have installed it on one PC and it seems to be trouble-free so far (touch wood), but I wondered if any of you had had any other problems with SP3 after installation?

No problems with three installations after consulting Installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) also adding disabling firewall, internet connection and real time protection for spyware applications. It would seem that installation via Safe Mode is required occasionally.

I installed SP3 on Wednesday night.
While I was out on Thursday night my wife was browsing on shopping sites and she said the screen just went black with a message that said,"This mode is not supported".
The computer wouldn't respond to anything, so she ended up switching it off at the mains and re-booting....it's been ok since.
My computer's normally very reliable...would I be jumping to conclusions to think that this was something to do with SP3 ?

I’m sure your machine will be perfectly alright and you experienced a little hiccough.
However, if IE7 is playing up and you installed SP3 without uninstalling IE7 first, there is no return to IE6. The situation is a tad more dire if a beta version of IE8 was present when SP3 was installed.
If, in the future, you want to reinstall XP, bear in mind that SP3 doesn’t include IE7.

Tested an install on my no.2 computer, (6 yrs old), Saturday, without any obvious issues arising. Decided to wait until Sunday and install on the much newer No.1.
In between heard locally of some advice I had not seen before, defrag before and after the install.
Sunday morning, defragged no.1 then installed, no issues. Analyzing afterwards I was really surprised as to how much fragmentation had taken place during that install. Although No.2 had not been defragged prior, it was the first time used in a week when it was given the regular full monthly cleanup. Nevertheless, Analyzing showed the same results as No.1, high fragmentation.
Thought this was worth a mention here.

Problems? Plenty! Here are some comments from a reliable geek on another forum:
I have read with interest some of the postings regarding the SP3 update.
Following the experiences I have had I would like to post the following for people to (if they wish) take note of. (They can of course ignore it entirely).
First
Turn off your windows automatic updates.
The reason for this is that you will get SP3 attempt to download and then install itself. (this is even if you have the auto install disabled).
If you have BT BB, Vodaphone BB, AOL BB then do not bother downloading as SP3 does not like these at all, you will spend hours trying to connect afterwards.
If by some act of fate you do install XP3 the only sure way to get rid is to do a system restore to at least a week before.
It will still go through the act of on boot up having to allow windows to remove all relevant files.
But beware it doesn't remove them you will have to do that by doing a cleaning process, and this is a long winded affair unless someone knows a quicker way of deleting all files.
XP SP3 does not like at least 90% of motherboards in use and for some reason it just does not like any over 5 years old.
XP SP3 does not like AMD 64+ CPU's.
XP SP3 does not like certain types of RAM.
XP SP3 does not like a range of the older graphics cards.
XP SP3 does not like some Lexmark and Epson printers, the drivers become corrupt and therefore do not work properly.
Certain modems will not work on XP SP3.
I could continue in what I have discovered for myself by allowing windows updates to download and install the b/**&y thing.
I have spent all night sorting out a mass of these problems and I am not a happy chappy.
It would appear that MS have released this with so many bugs and glitches in that it is still in a very low Beta stage. (but that is my opinion).
I have read a couple of reports today by googling that show a lot of people are unhappy with the latest update.
Some even compare it to the initial Vista in what it will or will not allow you to run on your PC and what hardware/software it will or will not allow to be compatible.
My (Riki) conclusion: why bother? My XP Pro is running perfectly and I am certainly not going to risk anything with some dodgy update.

I certainly don't class myself as a reliable geek but there's two items which can be contradicted.
I'm with BT Broadband, connection fully functional after install and since.

Installed first on a 6 year old, as mentioned earlier.
No issue there either.

Make that three items, just noticed the comment on Epson Printers.
Epson C62, 5 years old, used it this morning to run a couple of flyers off.
Still works.

my first attempt resulted in a failure then i read a thread on here that a good way to try was download sp3 to desktop then disable all protection & install in safemode done that and hey presto no problems

Problems with SP3? - Nowt to do with us claims Microsoft- it's the computer manufacturers to blame.

My AMD machine crashed so completely that it couldn't even be started in safe mode. I couldn't even get help from the maker for my OEM equipment because it happens to be Evesham which is in liquidation. Windows Update recommended making a backup before loading SP3 but what use is that if you can't see it?
I had to take it to a specialist who managed to save most of what was on my hard disk, but it cost £120. SP3 was in Beta form for quite a while isn't it strange that nobody picked up such drastic problems?

Regarding AMD Machines I Posted this About the issues with SP3.
Am passing on the Download until its more stable. Have got an AMD chip & ASUS board which is AMD preferred
