My computer which has Windows XP has been running slowly recently. It seems every time you try and shut down there’s some process that won’t shut by itself While I’m typing this out the Zone alarm icon on the bottom right of my screen is showing as lime green, with the message CPU 98% I’m typing this in word before I actually add it to the forum … Internet Explorer just stopped 5 minutes ago when I was about to log on to the forum page. If I open the Windows Task Manager this very second there are 47 processes running with the memory usage given as, for the big ones Teatimer.exe takes up, 31,000 K SVCHOST.exe in 5 times on the list, with the biggest memory usage figure of about 12,000 K VSMON.EXE takes another 13,000 K SPYBOT takes up 21,000 but I’m running a scan at this very moment Why are so many things running at the same time EXPLORER.EXE is taking 7,300 K but isn’t on at present MSNMSGR.EXE is taking 5,100 K and its also not running at present WHAT CAN I DO ?? Many thanks in anticipation |

You need to look at what's usng the CPU, not the memory. In Task Manager, click on the word CPU twice and it will sort them in order of usage. |

Richie I'm looking a the Task manager while typing this out (NOTHING ELSE IS RUNNING, or at least is running because of me) The figures keep changing, so I'll give rough maximum -minimum for those that move System Idle process 96 89 79 taskmgr 01 02 IEXPLORER 01 tEAtIMER 01 cidaemon 00 sgbhp 00 the rest are all 00 TOTAL THIS TIME IS 46 items |

That all looks pretty normal. Have you run anti-spyware scans? Maybe a Hijack This log check as a precaution? |
