Lost files during cut-and-paste

I was transferring jpeg holiday photos from a memory peg to a folder on my laptop; unfortunately I was using cut&paste rather than copy&paste. The laptop froze after 220 or so pix had apparently been transferred. I had to switch off mains and remove battery before I could reboot. I let it run a disk check. On rebooting, no sign of pix allegedly transferred before the crash, either on the memory stick or in the destination folder. I have found a large (0.5 MB) file made at the time of the crash...
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Repository\FS\OBJECTS.DATA
but can't open it using any of the programmes I have available. Also various smaller files such as OBJECTS.map.
How can I retreive my photos???? (simple instructions please, I'm a complete non-nerd!) Ta

You might want to try Restoration on your USB stick to see if it can get the files back.

Try using >>> Restoration <<<
Insert your USB drive, then select it in the Drives menu.
In 'All or part of the file' put whatever format the photos were recorded in such as 'JPEG' or 'JPG' then press the Search button.
Should it find them, highlight each one, then press 'Restore by copying'. This is preferably done to another drive so you don't over write any of the remaining items.
May or may not help. Worth a try.

Thanks for yr suggestion(s) but I'm a bit baffled... As I said in the original question: at the time of the crash the missing pix had already been cut from the peg to the C drive. But when the machine rebooted they were not visible on the C drive, and only the remaining, not-yet-cut, pix remained on the peg - ie the ones it hadn't got round to doing at the time of the crash. So if the 'transferred' pix survive at all they must be somewhere on the C drive, not the peg, tho perhaps in a temporary format???
And I'm afraid I don't follow yr suggestions anyway... if I do find any files, where do I find 'restoration' or 'restore by copying'?
I have double checked the peg using Search; only the uncut pix remain. But as I said, on the hard drive is a half-meg file (not folder) called OBJECTS.DATA made at the time of the crash, which I suspect is the temporary form of the pictures made during tranfer. Anyone know if / how I can get this file transformed into the pictures?

When you cut and paste, the deleted files are not actually deleted, they remain on the USB stick but with the first character of the file name removed so they don't show in a directory listing. We gave you a link to a programme called Restoration that can undo the deletion and restore the file name listing. You download the file, install it and then use it to examine your USB stick for 'deleted' files. By the way, it will only work if you haven't started copying anything else onto the memory stick.
