missing ntoskrnl.exe file
|
|
I know this has been posted lots in past. I've read and done and to no avail. I have Windows XP, on boot-up says missing file. I boot off my cd, go to restore, and goes to DOS with C:\> I then have tried, expand g:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe and get Access is denied. I've tried copy g:\i386\driver.cab c:\system32\ntoskrnl.exe /v and get paramater not valid. I've tried for past 4 hours trying to fix this, and read it is easy. However, not for me. Please help. Thanks.

If you've booted with the CD, is the CD drive still your "G" drive when Windows isn't running? You may have the wrong paths in the 'expand' command.

Open the Recovery Console.
Try copying the .exe file rather than expanding it: Type ‘copy G:\i386\ntoskrnl.exe C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe’ (not the quotes but the 2 spaces) and press Enter.
If the above doesn’t work, rename the file by typing ‘ren C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.old’ (not the quotes but the 2 spaces) and press Enter. Then try the copy again.
Lastly, try running chkdsk, which sometimes works: Type ‘chkdsk /r’ (note the space) and press Enter.

Re: missing ntoskrnl.exe file

thanks for the reply. Here is my latest step. I put the ntoskrnl.exe file onto a cd. I've booted up in recovery mode - **it doesn't give me the option to choose what operating system / nor enter a admin password ** - it goes right to the c:\> prompt. From there, this is what I typed - copy f:\ntoskrnl.exe c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe Then I get, after a minute of the computer chugging away, it says Access is denied.
I'm going to try and rename ntoskrnl.exe as old and then copy new file in...I'll see if that works...but I am stumped....can't seem to figure out why I get access denied, bad paramaters, etc.

latest news: can't even dir c:, says something like error with disk enumeration. I've done the chkdsk and it won't finish because of error...so i guess my drive is hooped...i'm going to try and get what info off I can and reformat....last call for other ideas...
