Desktop icon on Taskbar

My previous computer showed a desktop icon next to the Start button on the Taskbar.
New computer has Windows XP Pro installed but no Desktop icon has appeared on the Taskbar, and it is an icon that I used many times a day on the old computer.
Can anyone advise me how to put it there again as I have tried the Help Files and it appears not to work if one follows the Help & Support file suggestion.

Do you have the Quick launch tool bar showing (Right click an empty part of your Task Bar > Tool Bars > Quick Launch.
Failing that, download and run this fix . . . >> Restore Missing Show Desktop Icon to Quick Launch provided by Doug Knox.
