Virtual memory too low...

I've got this balloon message many times about increasing my virtual memory. I've tried suggested tweaks before & they seemed to work pretty good for some time. The balloon just popped up again & I was wondering if you had any suggestions. Also, could this be a reason why I get alot of "not responding" programs?

To alter the virtual memory settings:
1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and then click Properties then click on ADVANCED..
2. Click the Performance then settings
3. Click ADVANCED then Virtual Memory, and then click CHANGE
4. Click the hard disk that you want to use for virtual memory, and then select the minimum and maximum amounts of virtual memory.
5. Click OK, click OK, and then restart your computer.
see what space is allocated for virtual memory, increase it if necessary.

Which version of Windows are you using and how much physical memory is installed in your PC?

I suggest you to install more physical memory(RAM).

My computer stats:
Dell Dimension 4400
Pentium 4,1.6GHz
20 GB EIDE hard drive
Windows XP Home SP2.
Web browser: Firefox
Security: McAfee Security Suite Complimentary Subscription
Email client: MSN Hotmail
Internet connection: COMCAST cable
My memory stats:
256MB RAM
Total paging size for all drives: 384MB
Initial size: 384MB
Maximum size: 384MB
Minimum allowed: 2MB
Recommended: 382MB
Currently allocated: 384MB
I read that the Initial & Maximum sizes should be 1.5 times your total RAM.
Yesterday I got 2 error messages:
1. Oops...
Error:Out of memory

when I hit ok, I got the next error:

(the rest of the error message is exactly the same, except now it's line 48).
Previously, I tried a change I was told about to let the system manage the memory. That didn't work either. How much RAM should I have? If I have to increase my RAM, I don't want to just pick a random number to increase to. Also, will more RAM increase processing speed?

That is way to little physical memory. I would add another 512mb of RAM or even 768mb to bring it up to 1gb. Additional memory is one of the cheapest forms of upgrade to any PC and you will see a huge improvement is processing time.

Remove the 256Mb of RAM and replace with 1Gb.

Hello alant If you want to upgrade your memory to 1gb you can do no better than visit aememory a 1gb memory chip will cost about £28 obviously you will have to ascertain what increments you need.

I upgraded my RAM from 256 meg to 1 gig. The response time is much better and I don't get "not responding" errors or virtual memory errors any more.
