display settings vista

Vista home premium
on start up I get the message some startup menus cannot be displayed change resolution. problem is that Display settings only shows up to pixel size and the rest is off screen so cannot see ok or apply. It is showing 1280x600.Have tried moving the taskbar to the side and moved the display settings right up to the top and still cannot see apply.
Please can any one help me
