my vista machine is 2 days old. having been driven paranoid by trying to keep my xp machine 'clean' from nastys i was wondering what i need for this one. i have avast anti-virus, vista seems to have come with windows defender witch from what i can tell is on access. as for the firewall, is vista's firewall good enouph? i was using ashampoo free firewall and loved it. im waffling basicly can anyone recomend a good list of vista security programs that are freeware. thanks |

Im running Vista Premuim with Zone Alarm, AVG Anti Virus & Anti Spyware, and Spybot. These do the job for me. I dont know if Ashampoo is compatible with Vista! Hope that helps |

thanks for that. good to know that zone alarm works with vista. im still unclear as to weather the vista firewall is good enouph. sort of why hog resorces if i dont have to. i had spybot but was wondering if windows defender is also good enouph. All this brings about the question . . why cant windows come with GOOD programs installed. Seems to me after a few days using vista, the main differance is eye candy. (very nice eye candy but i guess the novelty will soon go after my first crash) thanks bobnemesis |

2 days and your thinking of crashes? zone alarm is much much better than windows firewall, and i agree with bob on spybot s&d, its a must. if you want a deceent firewall that doesn't take up to much resources then try pc.tools firewall. |

How can windows defender be deleted or disabled, can't see it in add/remove programs & couldn't see any options within the program itself? |

shirazee , depends on your operating system. For XP try this....click start > run > and type in msiexec /uninstall windowsdefender.msi /quiet /log uninstall.log > OK. The other option for both XP and Vista is to download and run the.... windows installer clean up utility.. Also........If you have Spybot or CCleaner , for example , then these apps have sections for uninstalling programmes , although i'm not sure if Windows Defender actually appears in their uninstall lists , you'd have to check it out. |

it's not listed on add/remove on any of those either & the uninstall command didn't work so I did a bit of Googling - seems the only way is to disable it, I removed the tick from automatic scanning, disabled the real time protection and removed it from startup. Thanks for your help

i don't see why you would want to disable or uninstall defender its not doing any harm, and must be of some use! |
