HI I have just purchased a MAC Mini and was wondering what security/privacy I should put on it. Gerry |

I have a Mac Mini, one of the original ones, and have never installed any anti-virus or anti-spyware software in it. There are anti-virus applications, but the definitions tend to be for Windows viruses, which rather defeats the purpose, although it could be argued that they safeguard PCs networked with a Mac. |

Hi Thats good news I think. Have you thought about CCleaner?? Gerry |

I'm not aware of a version of CCleaner for the Mac (even on Piriform's own website), although I do use it with my Windows PCs.

ClamXav just google for it as it's free and will keep your Mac reasonably safe. Mac do have probs with viruses and malware but the threat is low I have has a mac pro for two years and so far had no problems just run clam xav once a month. Hope this helps Denisimo |

Thanks thats great. I have downloaded ClamXav. SO there is nothing out there free to clean up history? (Like CCleaner) Gerry |

Dont know of anything! perhaps others will know. I use old Clammy for virus protection and SuperDuper for backup, apart from that I use Time Machine so if I delete by mistake I can easily restore the file. Hope you get on with clamXav

Does "ClamXav" run continuously in the background, like a Windows AntiVirus program, and bring the whole system to a grinding halt, or does it only run when asked to do a scan like Malwarebytes? |

Quote: I'm currently using linux ubuntu 9.04 on dual boot laptop. Much the forums advice I have come across lately encourages linux users to have an antivirus app installed mainly because it protects other (windows) users. One site says you need an AV: "to scan a Windows drive in your PC to scan a Windows-based network attached server or hard drive to scan Windows machines over a network to scan files you are going to send to other people to scan e-mail you are going to forward to other people Linux virus infections are theoretically possible" Doesn't the same apply to Macs? For cleaning Macs a la CCleaner, I came acoss this. |

No I run it once every week or so, because the risk at present is low I feel this cover is adequate, but of course this situation may change if Mac continue to increase their percentage of the market. If that happens I will have to consider purchasing a different virus prog for mac. Regards denisimo |

OK, thanks for the info. I've also downloaded "MacCleaner", but it won't run. I just get an error that it is "not supported on this architecture". There is nothing on their website to say that it only works with Intel processors (I have a PowerPc G4 processor) but I've posted a message on their support forum. |

Can't help you there never used it. I Have an Intel Mac Pro so that don't help you either as it's my first Mac purchased 2007. I also run XP 32bit alongside leopard so got best of both worlds

I've had a reply in their forum confirming that it only runs on Intel processors. As there are undoubtedly still more PowerPC Macs in use than Intel ones, it is unfortunate that they failed to mention this fundamental requirement in their "System Requirement" details.
